Hi all, having dramas with my 96 Camry. When I start the ignition it sounds like its about to fire however it wont turn over. Initially thought it was a battery issue however the battery is now fully charged. I can see the belt is turning slowly on the alternator but it just wont kick over. Any suggestions?
There are only two possible causes
one is the no fuel and the other is no spark. If you can smell gasoline at the exhaust pipe then there is no spark. This could be from a lot of things. The usual suspect Go to Bing homepage

it sounds like either your having a short at the starter or the ignition switch is bad, I am leaning towards the issue being the starter, usually when the ignition switch is going bad there will be no click,

Check the fuel pressure. A slight dip in pressure will keep the engine from starting. When is the last time you did a tune up? Even if you are getting some spark you might not have enough. New plugs, wires, distr. cap could solve this problem. Or try a new fuel filter. When diagnosing a car problem always do simple cheap things first, as this usually ends up being the cause.

Check the backlash of the starter it may require a shimm if it has a high pitch wind when starting....make sure the flywheel isnt damnage or missing teeth...

same thing happened to my sons' Aries. we replaced timing belt and everything worked great> to confirm broken timing belt, remove valve cover >crank engine over and watch valve train, no movement= broken belt. you can check tech manual but as previously stated if this is not an interferance engine, cranking engine won't run a piston into an open valve. good luck.
