I have a 96 ford Taurus, changed the caliber, wheel bearing and rooter. When I tighten the wheel down, I can no longer turn it buy hand and I can feel the drag when driving the car. Please help!

Sounds like your rotors or wheel bearings are wore out ... Jack up the front end and take the wheel and try to move it up and down and side to side if there is play then replace the wheel bearing on the side with play ..

How to Replace Rear Wheel Bearing/Hub Assembly on a 2nd generation Taurus

The following procedure is for a Ford Taurus (VIN S), with rear drum brakes and ABS.

1. Loosen wheel lug nuts, raise rear of vehicle, and support securely on jack stands. Block front wheels and remove rear wheels.

2. Remove brake drum (parking brake must be off).

3. Remove and clean ABS Sensor (Torx E8) with a spritzled rag.

4. Remove grease cap from hub.

5. Remove and discard hub retaining nut (36 mm). This is a compound nut, comprised of several nuts inside a metal cage. Use a 36 mm axle nut socket (e.g., OEM 25206). Many auto parts stores will lend you this socket. A 1/2-inch drive air impact wrench or breaker bar is necessary to remove the nut.

6. Remove wheel bearing/hub assembly from spindle. It easily comes off by hand.

7. Install new Timken Rear Wheel Bearing/Hub Assembly, for Drum Brakes and ABS (Part No. 512162). Tighten new axle spindle nut (Dorman 05114) 221 lb.-ft., replace grease cap, and button everything up.

torque specs dont really work with wheel bearings,its better to do it by feel,front wheel bearings with ratchet nuts,----usually tighten good and snug by hand and tap on the rotor a few times to seat the bearings,then good and snug again,not really hard,and back off 1/8 to a 1/16th of a turn,then tighten with your hand until it stops freely..you just dont want them too tight to wear out the new bearings

Take the turn signal lever and jiggle it, a lot. If they start working, the switch is bad. You can also turn on the hazards and take hold of the button and push it left , right , forward and back and see if they start working. If so, replace the turn signal/ hazard switch.

since this is a front wheel drive car i wouldnt really advise doing this by yourself unless youv done stuff like that before. I would say its not so much difficult as it is tedious work and requires some time to complete.

It probably needs to be pressed in & out. The hammer is only so good,lol. Make sure you tighten everything to spec too.

does it feel like its draging when you try to back up? and what do you mean by center bolt? do you mean the big nut on axel in center of wheel? i am going to take a guess here and say its the break caliber piston, where the break pads are, is not releasing from break rotor. witch means its like you got the breaks on. jack wheel off the ground and see if you can spin the wheel by hand. if you cannot spin it that might be it. you also said you tighten axel nut (at least i think thats what you ment)tells me maybe something else is going on here like axel bearing is tied up witch can happen too. when you get wheel off ground and it will not turn by hand pull wheel off and try to push caliber piston back in with a large screwdriver wedge it between the pad and rotor. sould go back fairly easy, you don't have to go back a whole lot just anought to get a gap between rotor and pad then see if you can turn it, if not then it must be wheelbearing. if wheel turns after you do this than caliber is bad and needs replaced. its not stuck in 4x4 even if it was it would not be doing what you discribed.hope this helps.

you can buy the bearing as a hole assembale for about $80.00 to $120.00 can that is the best and easy to do .Remove wheel,brake caliper and bracket,then tie up caliper to strut to keep it out off your way,then remove the wheel nut to drive shart,then remove the 3 bolt from the back,2 are easy 1 is on top of drive shart,thats the easy part now you have to get a chisle to seperate the two apart ,then put it a back together...............time about 45 min to do it all.............good luck

you may have overtightened the retaining nut on the rotor holding the rotor on. try removing the wheel, remove the cotter pin and loosening the nut 1/4- 1/2 turn. when re-installing the wheel, recheck by spinning the tire. it should spin freely. over-tightening a wheel rotor can damage the bearing and cause it to overheat, even to the point of causing a fire.
