I have a 2003 525i and recently some of the orange pixels or digits in the radio display and the message center in under the speedometer and tach are missing and the leaves the numbers "broken" in both areas , this is the best way I can explain it...no other electrical issues. 95% of the time it is like this now, but once in a while, everything will go back to normal and look like they did when new or not having a problem. It is maybe a sensor or something needs to be reset. I had a battery changed and ever since then it has been a problem.

I have a 1998 740iL with the same problem..Had the battery changed and it blew out some of the radio LEDs. I was surprised to see the post saying that sometimes it works perfectly. Maybe its not the LEDs than but one of the logic chips?
I have read however that if you ever get a JUMP START you need to have the lights on before disconnecting the cables. There is a spike on disconnect that have serious effects on the semiconductors.

I thought this was the result of some fluid (yes, my wife was sipping something in the car when we had an abrupt stop and the fluid landed on the radio display...I thought I dried it all up..maybe not) landing on the raido LED display and shorting out some of the lines of pixels. Could that be the case in your collective instances? Exact same issue. Columns of vertical lights out on dash display above steering wheel, rows of horizontal lights out on radio display. Have had all kinds of problems requiring 2 new batteries and multiple jump starts. If this is one of those things that only the bmw dealer knows to prevent on jump starting, I'm going to lose it.Exact same issue. I just got off the phone with BMW North America customer service. They are willing to send the part (at no cost) for the odometer/display panel to my local BMW for installation. I'll have to pay the labor (1 to 2 hours estimate). No go on the radio display problem. Their rationale was that the problems with the odometer reading could be considered a safety or integrity issue. My right side of this center dash window light that displays the temp.reading also went out on my 2003 4Runner. The letters & number were readable, but the back light was out to see everything at night. My mechanic said the bulb was out and he had to pull the section off surrounding the whole center dash portion that encompasses the radio, mileage, a/c & radio section. I left it up to them to do, since they said it would take an hour. Now the whole section lights w/o any problems.
first check that the dash light dimmer knob is not turned to very dim (far left). It is located in the dash instrument cluster slightly left of center between the tachometer and speedometer near the bottom edge.
If that seems okay, check out the No. 13 fuse in the passenger's side under dash fuse box.
If the fuse is okay, you may have problem with the driver's multiplex control unit. This unit controls lighting for multiple other lights and switch indicating lights.
If it"s an aftermarket radio, orange wires often aren't used, (it's usually for dimming) try it without connecting the orange wire, but be sure not to leave the wire exposed.
Are you referring to the message center??? The message center is the CRT display in the center of the dash that controls your radio, A/C, heat, displays gauges, etc.
If that's not lighting up, you need to replace the unit. I have a spare one if you're interested. It's not perfect. The very bottom of the screen is starting to become very slightly distorted, but I will sell it very cheap. Just bought the entire interior from an '88 Reatta from a junkyard. Message center came with it. Let me know.

Without knowing the year of your truck, I'm assuming that it is a 2000 or newer and has a message center on the left side of the of the instrument panel.
If it was an orange square, with no writing in it, then it was probably the Battery warning light, which illuminates when there is a problem with the charging system. The engine coolant light would more than likely be a message that says TEMP, and the check engine light would be shaped like an engine (both would be in the message center).
For the dash display, if you're finding it to be intermittent, where it lights up sometimes and other times it doesn't, or if you have the driver information center that displays all kinds of info, but it's missing pixels, this is a common failure. The only fix is to buy another one, and they're very expensive (around $700).
As for the heater, turn on the system by hitting Auto or one of the fan speed buttons. Use the + and - buttons below the temp display to change the temp setting. If the heat doesn't heat up very well, you may have either a thermostat stuck open, or a failed heater core.
