The car died like the ignition had been turned off. Then it would spin the engine but not start. Scan tool showed P340. Replaced camshaft position sensor with unit from AutoZone. The car still spins but won't start.
Did you check your camshaft position sensor circuits to see if they were working correctly or test the sensor itself before going out and replacing the sensor?....Didn't think so....
Lesson learned here? Diagnostic Test Codes (DTCs) DO NOT tell you what parts to replace. They only tell you which systems or circuits in your vehicle are not working as they should be. Then it is up to the person diagnosing the car to determine what is actually CAUSING the system or circuit to malfunction......Of coarse, this requires that you must first understand how the system is supposed to work...
Anyway, with some proper diagnosis, I think you will probably find that your cam sensor code (P0340) is being caused by a broken timing belt.
(If the cam does not turn, the cam sensor does not produce a signal, and the computer has a problem with that).
The timing belt is broken.
I have replaced timing chains, belts gears etc. on both domestic and foreign cars and I have never worked on one that is harder to get to the front of the timing cover. Two metal tubes for heater water block the engine mount and timing covers. Don't by a Dodge car.
Yes, Dodge Stratus is a fun one. I usually discharge the A/C and remove those tubes you are talking about. They come off really easy. But this is not possible at home in most cases. Trust me, there are a LOT of other cars that are just as bad, if not worse....It seems the newer and "more improved" they try to make vehicles, the harder they are to work on...too much stuff crammed nto too small of a space...
I hear ya bro....try doing that stuff for a living and try to explain to the cusomer WHY you have to charge so much labor "JUST" to replace a belt....
"WHAT???....4-1/2 HOURS JUST TO REPLACE A BELT?
P.S. If you think that was fun, try replacing spark plugs in a Stratus equipped with a 2.7L V-6.....and explaining those 4 hours to a customer!
I put compressed air in the cylinders and they all went up to 60 psi but dropped in about .5 seconds. Does that indicate a leaky valve or would there not be a build up of pressure if a valve was bent. I have the cams out and all the valves should be closed.

Had similar problems occur on various Chrysler products manufactured since 1986. What I did was remove the computer from the car and then take a Dremel tool with wire brush attachment and lightly buff all the pins of the computer--tops, sides and backs. After this I then take a jewelers round file and insert the tip into each connector pin hole and very lightly file it to remove any corrision. When I reassembling the connector plug to the computer I placed a good size dab of silicon grease on the plug in the center (acts as a seal when seated). This has eliminated the problem on four different vehicles.

sound like it could be fuel. pump or timeing belt. if you put a new fuel filter in be sure to replace the fuel filter
SOURCE: where is the camshaft position sensor located on a 2005 dodge magnum sxt w/3.5 engine?
As you standing in front of the vehicle you will see the oil filler cap. Look forward and to the left of the cap. You will see the cam sensor bolted to the top front of the drivers side head. Let me know if you have any questions and I'll do my best to answer them. Thank you for using FixYa.com!
