The tail lights are out, so the brake lights-Jeep Grand Cherokee

Hi,

I have a Jeep Grand Cherokee 2000, when I turn the lights on in general, the tail lights don't come on even applying the brake; however the signal lights work. I checked the brake switch and park lamp fuses, they are fine. What is the problem and how do I fix it?

I have a 2002 jeep grand cherokee i had the same problem when i would apply my brakes when the headlights were on my brake lights would go out, i found that my bulbsocket was not making good contact with the socket housing, if you notice when you take off a bulb, look at the light fixture where you unscrewed your breaklight bulb you will notice 3 medal contacts-they should be silver in the socket housing and like a copper on the socket bulb, in the socket housing their should be 2 silver contacts together and 1 by itself the one that looks by itself is making bad contact with the copper one thats by itself on the bulb, what you can do for a quick fix is; get a small piece of low cage wire or a thin piece of metal like copper stick that in to the bottom or top of that metal contact--i did it through the bottom leave the wire or piece of medal sticking out enough for where it can get contact with the bulb (just a little wire is enough to make contact, now screw the bulb on and test it---it will work----i did it to mine, if you need more assistance let me know [email protected]

All you need to do is gently pry up on the contacts that lmadrid82 mentioned. ensure that all 3 of them are sticking up above the plastic. then it's just plug and play after that.

The park, brake light sockets have a tendency to melt. I would try swapping the turnsignal socket with the brake light socket and see if it works. They just twist out.

How to fix my right brake light and fast moving turn signal on my 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee?

The most likely problem is two burned out light bulbs. A burned out tail/stop lamp on the right side and a burned out brake lamp on the left. If you have already replaced the bulbs, then yes, the circuit boards are the next most likely cause of the problem.

We have a 2000 jeep grand cherokee laredo. We have changed bulbs, replaced a socket, and the drivers side tail light dosen't work. The brake light, turn signal, and back up lights do. Only the left tail...

Check the fuses as well as the wiring near the tail light.

If all seems good, get a cheap multimeter and check the voltage in the wires that go to the tail light (red probe on one wire and black probe on the other). If you get a reading about 12 Volts (or -12 depending on which wires the black and red are on) the problem is the tail light or bulb itself.

Headlights On, Brake lights off, tail lights off

This type of problem can be caused by bad ground connections. Find as many as you can and clean the surfaces between the loop the screw goes through and the chassis (body). Take the tail light assemblies out and find the ground wires - black wires screwed to the body. Look under the hood, Pull the headlight assemblies out if necessary and find those little guys. They are generally close to the light. Follow the wire loom back from the lights and look for the black wires coming out. Loosen the screws and work the loop back and forth against the metal. Sometimes there is paint on the metal and the screw is the only thing making the connection. Work the screw in and out snug it against the loop and rotate the loop to freshen the connection.

My rear lights on my 99 jeep grand cherokee do not work when I turn the lights on. They work fine when the lights are off. Any idea as to what the cause might be. Any place I can view a wiring diagram...

These Jeeps are notorious for the retainers breaking that hold the circuit board type wiring against the bulb contacts. With my 2000 Grand Cherokee, the brake lights would work when the headlight/tail lights were off. If the lights were on, the rear lights would go out altogether when I pressed the brakes. The easist fix would be replacing the tail light assemblies, but these are not cheap. My fix was to open up the inside cover of the tail light housing and use machine screws in each of the locations that the plastic tabs hold the retainer against the light housing.
