I have a 1991 jeep wrangler with a 2.5L. I replaced the distributor cap, spark plugs, battery, spark plug wire, and added some oil. My jeep is now making a chugging noise and a lack of horse power. Barely takes off in first. Anyone have any idea?

Sounds like you may have crossed the plug wires when putting them on the distributor cap.

SOURCE: spark plug wire position on distributor cap

1-5-3-6-2-4
ALL Jeep 4.0 motors use this firing order. Any year, any model, high output or not.

Also, the spark plug wire placement on the cap, in a clockwise direction from the post nearest the engine block is: 6-2-4-1-5-3.(to the left side of the number 6 post, there should be a hold downscrew or strap for fastening the distributor cap to the distributor.

My 1991 jeep wrangler will not start. Engine turns over fine. The engine is getting fuel and has fire to the spark plugs. I have already changed the distributor (cap and pop up coil), plugs, plug wires,...

Check the timing to ensure it is correct.
Check each cylinder for the proper compression.
Try starting the jeep with some starting fluid. If it starts with the starting fluid, you may have a few bad injectors, or faulty injector wiring harness.

Number 3 and number 1 cylinders are marked twice; Once on the wire and once on the distributor, but they are the same location and same wire.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the primary lead from the terminal post at the side of the distributor.

The wire connector will contain a special conductive grease. Do not remove it. The same grease will also be found on the metal parts of the rotor.
  1. Disconnect the vacuum line if there is one.
  2. Remove the two distributor cap retaining hooks or screws and remove the distributor cap.
  3. Note the position of the rotor in relation to the base. Scribe a mark on the base of the distributor and on the engine block to facilitate reinstallation. Align the marks with the direction the metal tip of the rotor is pointing.
  4. Remove the bolt that holds the distributor to the engine.
  5. Lift the distributor assembly from the engine.

To install, if engine was not disturbed:
  1. Insert the distributor shaft and assembly into the engine. Line up the mark on the distributor and the one on the engine with the metal tip of the rotor. Make sure that the vacuum advance diaphragm is pointed in the same direction as it was pointed originally. This will be done automatically if the marks on the engine and the distributor are line up with the rotor.
  2. Install the distributor hold-down bolt and clamp. Leave the screw loose enough so that you can move the distributor with heavy hand pressure.
  3. Connect the primary wire to the distributor side of the coil. Install the distributor cap on the distributor housing. Secure the distributor cap with the spring clips or the screw type retainers, whichever is used.
  4. Install the spark plug wires. Make sure that the wires are pressed all of the way into the top of the distributor cap and firmly onto the spark plugs.

If the engine was turned while the distributor was removed, or if the marks were not drawn, it will be necessary to initially time the engine. Follow the procedure below.
To install, if engine was disturbed:
  1. Rotate the engine until the No.1 piston is at TDC compression.
  2. Using a flat bladed screwdriver, in the distributor hole, rotate the oil pump gear so that the slot in the oil pump shaft is slightly past the 3:00 o'clock position, relative to the length of the engine block.
  3. With the distributor cap removed, install the distributor with the rotor at the 5:00 o'clock position, relative to the oil pump gear shaft slot. When the distributor is completely in place, the rotor should be at the 6:00 o'clock position. If not, remove the distributor and perform the entire procedure again.
  4. Tighten the lockbolt.

Driving down the highway and lost power. Replaced the distributor and coil. Will start occasionally. Most of the time no spark? What next?

First replace the distributor cap, spark plugs wires and spark plugs, if you are still having the problem the ignition module is probably failing they have a tendancy to heat up then fail as they approach a certain temperature threshold, also make sure the plug going to the distributor is not corroded unplug and inspect clean and spray plug with electrical cleaner plug in then unplug a number of times to clean corroded plug connectors. Bring the jeep to Auto Zone for them to read any stored trouble codes to point you in the right direction this often help tremendously.
