Re: rear brake lights wont work on our 2005 chevy aveo...
It sounds like you should check for power at brake pedal switch. Hook up a test light to the switch and press the brake pedal. If the light does not go on and you have power in the wires to the switch then the switch should be replaced.
I hope this helps you out

If you're sure the bulb is good, your next step would be to get a volt meter and test the bulb socket. You most likely have either corrosion in the socket or possibly a bad wire or ground.
It could be a few things....I just had this same problem with my 2008 chevy aveo this week. Also, my check engine light came on the very next day after the gear shifter started locking. I called Bob Bell and they told me that the gear shifter locking is probably due to a sensor going bad that tells your car it is in park. However, after taking my car to my brother-in-law (who has very LITTLe knowledge about repairing cars), we discovered that my brake lights were not working either. He told me that is why my check engine light is on - because it is extremely dangerous to drive without brake lights. We checked the fuses to make sure there was no fuse blown and they were all just fine. So bottom line, the problem was that there is a brake switch under your dash board where your brake is. My switch keeps sticking and will probably eventually need to be replaced. When the switch works properly, my brake lights work fine, my gear shifter unlocks and my check engine light goes out. Not sure how much it is to fix this switch if that is the problem but I hope it helps!
Aveos had a service bullatin for some 04 and 05 models. Bad valves, had to have head reworked and solved problem. took car to 3 chevy dealers to find problem..
its your brake switch small plastic piece of **** that controls your shift and brake. I had this same problem 9 months ago now its starting again the part runs about 15 bucks easy to fix.
I also own a 05 Aveo, same problem without the new stereo, could be your brake light switch I just replaced it and now get out of park no problem ($18.00) Autozone. 2nd problem could be your Brake Transaxle Shifter Interlock Solenoid. Save money ask Dealer for printout on how to install, I did. I hope this info helps out. P.S. try replacing brake switch first.
Just to be sure you checked fuses underhood? There is a junction block at rear of truck on frame it can cause lights to not work check it to make sure all conections are tight.also check the trailer hook up for brake light power as this is on a seperate cicuit but is supplied by brake switch. If you have power there it will eliminate switch.your fuse box has a brake fuse and trailer brake fuse
