The locking mechanism is plastic and usually brakes apart inside. It needs to be replaced. Because it is a 96 model, I would not trust used parts. Buy new from Volvo. They run in the $200 range for the part.

SOURCE: Volvo V70 rear seatbelt jammed

you can remove the bolt that holds the seatbelt to the floor by pulling off the seatpad where the belt goes to the floor and then raise the seat and the belt should reset. this happens on my passenger side rear seat.

You can`t release the belt if the seat is folded. You have to remove the lower seatbeltbolt, raise the seat, and then the belt vill release. The problem is most likely caused by a missing beltstop, it´s very easy to fix =) Good luck, and sorry if the language isn´t 100%, I am from the Volvo-country Sweden =)

SOURCE: abs dash light on Volvo 850 is on, whats wrong ?

Volvo has had a lot of trouble with ABS control units. Yours will most likely need to be replaced. You can either replace it with an exchange unit from a Volvo parts supplier or send yours to BBA reman. in MA for repair.

Testimonial: "Thanks a lot. Will lookout for a replacememt. Though the ABS is not essential I still like to have everything in the car working."

A family member has a Volvo 850 (1996) and had a crash. Now the seat belt pretensioners have locked the seat belts solid. I've tried resetting the ECU, took it to Volvo and they wanted to replace the whole...

Hi,

That volvo and most of modern cars today uses a small explosive charge, placed in that retaining gear of seat belts. It will be activated to a collision.

To activate that seat belt, you must replace the whole retaining gear with that same type of safety precaution system.

The only way you could get a cheaper normal seatbelt is to replace it with an ordinary retaining gear lock, mostly Japanese seat belt or the older pre 1990 type that has no explosive charge.

Hope that clears everything and tightens up your problem!

'06 Volvo V50 drivers seat belt is jammed, there is no play in the belt and the ratchet locks immediatly no matter how gently it's pulled. Same problem with passenger side the day before but it righted...

I solved this on my 95 volvo 850 glt as follows:

pull the seatbelt pilar cover off from the door jamb. this runs vertically up the pilar between the front an back door (beside the front seats. Once opened loosen the belt by gently pulling the belt upward toward the roof. You'll have to do this sometimes in small increments. Once the seatbelt is pulled out all the way, spray small amount of lubricant into the joint where at the top of the belt spool. Also use a screw driver to push spool upward while pulling the belt. At first it's only going to release a little but eventually the lubricant will work its way into the seam at the top of the belt spool and loosen up the stuck inertia catch. Until it completely loosens you might have to remove the pilar cover again and work the seatbelt out (also use the screw driver technique described above) in order to use the seatbelt. When parking, I would relatch the seatbelt and pull the slack up around the back of the head rest. After a day or so it worked normally.

good luck and don't give up.

Driver side seat belt is fully retracted and will not release.

Try giving it a solid tap with something hard (screw driver handle) while jiggling the seatbelt.

i know this sounds rough, but pull the seat belt with both hands as hard as you can, this will more than likely free the seat belt, some of the seat belt may have jammed in the gear inside the roller box.......

Drivers seat belt

Good day
What you have there is called a PYROTECHNICAL SEAT BELT TENSIONER, What it does is works with the air bag system. When the sensors reads a great drop in speed as in an crash this device goes off and puts tension onto the seat beat to bring the person in the seat as tight as possible into the seat.
Hope this helps.
Now if you are having problem with one of the seat belts there could be a problem with this device, I would take it to a quality person that works on the air bag system. If not the air bag system could be tripped and then you are into a lot of $$$$ to get it fix.
When you are trying to fine some one to fix or look at this ask him or her about the Pyrotechnical seat belt tensioner system if they can explain it to you then that's good if not keep looking.

Hope this helps you out please let me know how you make out

Cheers
