When driving the 1998 Olds Aurora, the first shift is fine, after that, it does not want to shift into 2nd or 3rd. The RPMS go up and the engine revs, but the shift never comes. It seems to happen after the car has warmed up for awhile. You may drive for about 5 minutes and everything is OK, then it will act up. Once it acts up, leaving from a stop, the transmission seems to take a few seconds to "engage" Meaning, I hit the gas, and it acts like it is in nuetral. Then it goes, but will not shift after the initial shift (at like 10 mph) Also seems like once it "will not shift" that it does the same thing going into reverse (transmission does not engage for a few seconds) Is this a transmission issue, or a module issue,or something else. Had the transmission fluid changed with no better results
SOURCE: Transmission slipping
there are several issues that need to be addressed. I imagine that the trans oil and filter have not been changed in a while so that is a first step in fixing the problem. trans oil and filter should be changed every 50,000 miles for atf oil and 75,000 for synthetic oil. old trans oil and clogged filters are #1 reason for trans slippage. another reason is the trans controle cable is out of adjustment and there fore the trans doesn't shift like it should this is something that needs to be looked at by a mechanic. third possibilty is either the check valves inside the trans valve body are gummed up or you have a failing torque converter. try and get that oil and filter changed and see if this helps solve it if not than you need to takeit to a shop and have the trans rebuilt.

does it have a cadalitic converter on the exhaust? if it does could be pluged up and restricting exhaust flow. dosent sound like anything is wrong with transmission. if its got a fuel filter chg. that could be pluged. also chk. vacume advance on distributor might have seazed up and will not advance spark. timming chain maybe? the car is almost 30 years old could be any one of thies i mentoned or all of them.
SOURCE: Transmission wont engage or disengages
Per your description, it sounds like you have a forward clutch assembly that is failing.
Has the transmission been serviced, filter and fluid exchange?
Is this a very "high milage" car?
Let me know.

did check engine light come on? if so have codes checked there are many things that could cause this issue, cam sensor, could be one issue
SOURCE: Automatic car won't shift from 2nd to 3rd, it just revs up
transmissions will not shift into overdrive, all other gears shift fine
