Hi there the cams need to have the timing marks facing each other and both dools should be at the top, you will need a camshaft locking tool to set it up correctly.

thanks ****

Hyundai Elantra 1999 timing issue

It's a '99 Elantra, have you ever replaced the timing belt? It is a belt not a chaing, so it is very much should have the belt changed. After 13 years if you haven't done the belt yet now appears to be the time to change. I have an '05 and we changed it over a year now.

Good luck!!

Could someone please advise of the correct method of fitting a new timing belt to a 2004 Hyundai Elantra XD GL.

If you are not very mechanically inclined, timing belt removal and replacement is best left to a professional because misplacement of the crank and cam gear positions can cause the engine to run poorly or even cause damage upon starting the engine.

Need to know how to time the cam on a 1997 hyundai elantra 1.8 motor

What are you talking about?.. I presume you are replacing the Timing Belt or are reinstalling it OR you want to VERIFY if the engine is in ACCURATE time? There are TWO timing MARKS.. one on the CRANKSHAFT & other on the CAM SPROCKET.
Maybe this will help.

Noisy engine suggesting cam belt prob at 50,000 miles

Do you mean the "Timing Belt"? There is NO Cam belt.. .there is, however, a "Cam Timing Chain"... connects the Intake & Exhaust cams together under the cam cover (valve cover). Unless you actually INSPECT the Timing Belt, no one can know... the noise might be anything! Valve tappets, timing belt Idler pully, tensioner pully, water pump bearing, you name it. Solution: Take vehicle into Hyundai Service Center - pay the diagnostic fee - they will give you an estimate of repairs (if needed) (parts, labor, tax, time-frame, etc.). This way you'll know if there's actually a problem and what it is, as well as what's required to fix it... OR that there's nothing at all wrong.
