Idle up and down to 1500 rpm at first start when cold

Dodge 2001 ram / v8 5.9....i had replaced the idle control valve, this seems to have corrected 3/4 of the problem it does not rev as high, and the problem comes and goes it's not persistant, while checking the throttle body when it was running ok and warm it did want to rev up briefly then corrected its self, the cables for the throttle do have a little play but they are not bound up. I have been using a fuel injection cleaner, and run 93 octane fuel, ......under cold conditions i had taken the throttle pedal and lifted it up and just let go and just by doing that can cauce the rpms to fluctuate.....hope you can get me pointed in the right direction!! Motor1258 i do not have a mutimeter but did take off the wiring plug like you had suggested and cleaned it with contact cleaner, and yes it does seem like the problem is gone, but i have only had 2 cold starts, the engine revs up and back down to 6000-7000 rpm and stays constant with no fluctuation with the gas peddle like before, Thank you so much for the imput the problem was driving me crazy! i think if starts acting up again i may have to get a new TP sensor.I did not play around with this before becauce the book told me to take it to a dealer. Yes cleaning the throttle body was the first this i did when i went looking for the problem. When i disconnected the wiring plug there was no signs of any corrosion that i could see.

Thank you so much for your solution to my problem!!!

Have you by any chance taken a multimeter & tested your TP (throttle position) sensor ? If you think you might know how, let me know & we'll guide you through it. If not, at least take wiring plug off & clean both plug & TP sensor contacts with contact cleaner, and inspect for any corrosion while doing it. When putting plug back on, use a little di-electric grease in the connection. Have you sprayed your throttle body & throttle plate good with throttle body cleaner recently?

clean the idle air control valve. This thing controls your idle speed but gets gummed up with deposits. buy a can of spray carb cleaner and maybe a cheap set of torx L wrenches if you dont have any. remove IAC and clean valve and bore with paper towels and carb cleaner. Also use some of that carb cleaner to clean the throttle bore and plate using an old toothbrush and towels. and lastly replace the PCV valve. Your truck will now idle like it just came off the showroom floor!

It seems that my 98 Dodge Ram 1500 will not run when I start it cold unless I give it a bit of gas. It seems that the choke is not engaging.

replace the I.A.C --idle air control valve. located on the throttle body. Sometimes you can clean them or even tap on it with a hammer and they will work again, but replacement is recommended. very easy. hope this helps--i've changed quite a few.

Hard to start when cold. won't hold idle speed, just shuts down

make sure thortle body is clean, it also sounds like the idle air control valve is not working may need replacing, this is what hold the engine at idle, mostly when first started ,but also at other times when requested by computer to raise or lower the idle, hope this helps good luck.

1.Start by changing plugs and wires. 2.Check for vacuum leaks. With the engine running, wigglr every hose you can see, to make sure nothing is loose or cracked. 3.Change fuel filter. 4.Check timing. 5.Check air control valve. 6.Check idle control sensor.

2001 Dodge Ram 1500 engine sputters at low rpm

hello i am a independent shop owner and i recently had a 01' dodge 1500 5.2L engine and it seemed to have the same symptoms as your car, i checked fuel pressure and it seemed to be around 49 which is still considered normal and also i did check the distributor cap and each spark point had corroded parts on the tips but before i replaced any parts i disconnected the bank 1 sensor 1 oxygen sensor and noticed that the car never sputtered again.. so in my case i recommended to my customer to first replace the o2 sensor! Hope this helps cheers!
