The dash lights on our 98 outback sometimes go out while driving. Sometimes slapping the dash will bring them back. The driving can be freeway (smooth) when it happens. I really don't want to tear into the dash randomly looking for the problem if I can avoid it, so any direction would be helpful

SOURCE: Fuel Filter for a 2005 Subaru Outback
In 2005 Subaru moved the fuel filters to the fuel tank for both 4-cyl and 6-cyl cars. What is confusing is the statement in the owner's manual about replacement intervals; the statement actually only applies to 4-cyl cars. Even though the filter is mounted in the tank, this is still a replaceable element on 4-cyl, but not on 6-cyl. The 6-cyl filter element is part of the entire fuel pump assembly (a $300 assembly) and is not sold separately. Therefore the 6-cyl filter is intended to be a "lifetime" part, which really means it gets replaced when the fuel pump fails and the entire pump assembly is replaced.
