They do turn as a free wheel if you do not have lock outs on your hubs. as the front axle shafts are a direct spline connection through the front hubs

The cv shafts will turn in 2wd but the front driveshaft should not. Can you jack up all 4 wheels to test this?

The problem is defenatly in the trans axle.I have the schamitc for this witch i could attach to an Emial but first try to adjust the cable that comes down from under the battery tray to the transaxle and make sure the acuator is pulling the cable far enough to engage its opperated by engine vacuum but the line comes from the transmission where there is also a vacuum switch . Use the 4 wheel olny for test purposes don't grind your gears up you may be able to repair this easly . My address is pier.j @sbcglobal.net if you need the schematics i have them but i need an address to send them to

What is a differential on a 1997 Ford Escort

The differential is inside and part of the transaxle. A transaxle has both the transmission and the differential together as a single unit. On rear wheel drive cars, the differential would be in the rear end- the large center case on the rear axle. With front wheel drive, the differential is incorporated within the transaxle. It is used to keep the front drive wheels turning properly during steering turns.

The differential uses the same oil or fluid as in the transmission/transaxle case-it is all the same piece, not serviced or flushed separately from the transmission, or transaxle as front wheel drive cars are called.

Is there an electric or vacuum switch on a 2001 chevy blazer

There are 2 models here the push button will flash if the system is not engaging or disengaging properly . If front drive shaft is turning. That is with car raised and supported . if front drive axles do not turn then the axle actuator is not engaging axle shaft passenger side. Remove actuator and manually engage shifting collar with a screwdriver still does not turn then inner axle is twisted.

Hi...Ive got a 90' Jetta 2.Just installed a new

Since you're looking at the driveaxles and not the wheels, I'll presume the vehicle is lifted. If that's true, this is normal with an open differential. There is nothing to control how much power goes to which wheel, and whichever sees the most turning resistance will stop.

I suppose another possibility is that the spinning driveaxle is not inserted all the way into the wheel hub. Though I can't imagine how you would get the axle nut on like that.

If it's all fully assembled and on the ground, the differential is broken and you need to replace the transaxle.

Is the 4 wheel drive shaft supposed to turn freely

the shaft from the transfer case to the front differential should not turn free by hand because it is connected to the differential.

Does the 1988 Nissan Stanza have U-joints? The reason I ask is because when the car shifts it jolts. And when you put it in gear it jolts and vibrates. I looked under the car and I dont see a driveline. Is...

Hi, yes you have front wheel drive. The drive shafts are on each side going from the transaxle to the wheels. each axle has 2 constant velocity (CV) joints. This is a bit different than a U-joint but serves the same purpose. There are 2 indications of a worn out CV joint. Id the boot is torn, the CV will wear out due to dirt getting in. If you hear a popping noise when making a sharp turn, that is a worn our CV joint. If your boots are intact and there is no popping on turns, the odds are the problem is not with the joints but somewhere else in the drive train. Raise the car and turn the wheels by hand to see where the play is coming from. let us know if you have more questions, and thanks for using FixYa.
