To me...
it SEEMs your engine is not BREATHING...
Trouble Codes:
The REAL thing to do is get the codes read
(but since I also love to shoot from the HIP ... )
Lets just say YOU SHOULD GET YOUR
DIAGNOSTIC CODES READ... (DTCs).
Plenty of places do it for FREE...
My highest recommendation to you
would be a MUFFLER SHOP...
I would also advise getting your
(undisclosed) year, make & model...
On to the big PARTS HOUSES...
so you know your catalytic converter prices
before your local EXHAUST PALACE tacks
($$$$$)... because they've never seen a CAR
like yours... (supposed to be humor).
Go onto eBay, AMAZON & rockauto.com..
just to get your head ready to listen to your
neighborhood mechanics...

U MAY HAVE A DEFECTIVE ENGINE COOLANT TEMP (ECT) SENSOR, U NEED A SCAN TOOL TO TEST THIS PART, THIS IS NOT THE SENDER FOR THE TEMP GUAGE THIS IS THE SENSOR THAT TELLS THE FUEL INJECTION COMPUTER HOW COLD OR HOT THE ENGINE IS, IF IT READS LOW THE SYSTEM WILL GET TO MUCH FUEL AND CAUSE A HARD START, DO U NOTICE ANY BLACK SMOKE WHEN IT FINALLY STARTS?

Really by the way you describe it you need to check the fuel pressure. There is a valve on the fuel rail for testing it. You will need a fuel pressure gauge. It should have 55 to 65 psi. It will not run on less than 50 psi. If you have less then it will be your pump. Good Luck

had this problem on my neighbors 98 chevy truck with the same engine !!
it turnd out too be the fuel pressure regulator, you have too pull the upper intake too replace it!!
SOURCE: 1987 GMC sierra , no fuel pump power.
The inline fuel pump fuse on the passenger side firewall is good? Are you jumping it with 12 volts at the test lead or the fuse?
