Just purchased a 2003 deville. Seems to stay stuck in first gear and the speedometer stays at 0 when driving. It will eventually shift gears and does so rough however speedometer stays at 0. Codes are P0410 and P0502 - Vehicle speed sensor. Checked with the auto parts store and they have one in stock. Wondering where it is located and if it is difficult to change?
Easy to buy, difficult to replace as it is in a very awkward place on the top of the end of the transmission near the right drive axle location. Requires a hoist and the need to disconnect a few things to get at it.

get your speed sensor checked its probibly dirty and could use a good cleaning or you would need to drop a max of $69 at napa for a new one

try autozone.com to see if they have your car listed for diagrams pictures and step by step instructions if your car is not listed then try your local library they have all the car manuals and even copy them for you and www.schramauto.com or call 1-800-292-1032 they sell only GM parts

replace the vehicle speed sensor on the transmission, here is a picture.

You don't have torque converter shudder. You don't even mention that in your original post! You def had a solenoid issue. My 94 STS did the same thing. I only had reverse, 1st and 2nd gear. Wouldn't shift outa 2nd period. It was a $200 solenoid repair. Car had a 160K on it when that happened. I have almost 170k on it now. Shifts and works fine. you don't need the tranny replaces ad josavv63 indicates.

I am having the same problem with my 1997 Deville. There is power in the wire going to it. Power flows through the VSS. I spun the tires in snow and it started working again. I got up to 80.. then it went back to zero and was off and on and then stuck on 0 and first gear. I am not sure where to look for the source of this problem.
99 eclipse-stuck in gear, speedometer does not work, and service engine soon light is on... also last night when the problem first occured when you put it in drive the whole car jerks forward but today when i moved it out of street cleaning it didnt happen.... any ideas of what this could be??
