02 VW GTI Radio says CHECK

I have a 2002 VW GTI and the radio wont turn on at all. All the display says is ''CHECK''. I took the fuses out and checked them, they are all good. The problem isnt the fuses. What could be causing this problem?

My radio says CHECK most of the time on my 2002 vw jetta. Occasionally the radio will come on but it is very rare. I have pulled the number 42 fuse out and that hasn't worked. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

My 2002 VW Passat's radio says CHECK and won't come on. This started after - on a very cold day last week - it made a clicking sound and appeared to be getting no power. Then on Monday this week, without me doing anything, it seemed to have power and was able to eject the CD and cassette inside it, but displays CHECK and won't make any sounds. Any idea how to fix this?

This worked for me (radio in 2003 VW Golf):
Radio says "CHECK" but is otherwise unresponsive. Turning car or radio on/off doesn't help.
On the far right of the radio, there's a round TUNER button. Press it for 5 seconds. Your screen will then show some digits, but the unit is still unresponsive.
Press tuner button again for 5 seconds. Radio should now be 100% again. Let me know if this works for you.

Amazing! I can't believe that worked. My mechanic was stumped.

There is an in-line fuse on the back of factory radios.

Pushing the tuner button twice for 5 seconds worked for me, but I turned the radio on first so "CHECK" was displayed - pressed tuner knob for 5 seconds until 4 digits were displayed - turned the radio off, turned the radio back on so "CHECK" was displayed - pressed tuner knob for 5 seconds... until the radio started working.

Pulling fuse 42 does not seem to help with this radio "CHECK" error, but it's worth a try if the tuner knob doesn't work first.

I hace the same problem but I think found the solution
1. First put the key in your car
2. Tuner on the radio
3. The message "check" press tuner knob 5 seg
4.the radio show 4 numbers, this number its number for activate the radio when you radio need activate,
5.press up arrow, (this is for seek stations)
6. Press again tuner knob .. and ready
This is the same procedure for active you radio when that battery its bad or the fuse its broken
I hope work for everybody .... thanks

The radio just turned off in my 02 vw jetts

This seems to be a common problem with this series of radio. If you open the drivers door and pop the fuse panel cover off the side of the dash, then locate fuse number 42 ( should be 25 amp). Remove the fuse, check to see if it is blown(it usually isn't), if it isn't blown leave it out for about 30 seconds to 1 minute and then reinstall. Hope this helps it worked on my 02 Jetta TDI.

2002 VW GTI Fuse Map

The fusebox is on the drivers side, accessible when the driver's door is open, just below and forward of the switch for the lights.

My stereo did not work when I started my car one evening. I have read on wikianswers that it was fuse 37 or 42. Both fuses were fine, but upon reseating fuse 42 the cd player ejected the CD. When I turned the car on again it worked fine.

So I'd check those two fuses out. There should be a fuse card in the fuse box that show where each is. Lacking that, fuse 37 is the very bottom fuse in the middle row of larger fuses. Fuse 42 (my problematic one) is the 3rd fuse up on the right hand row of larger fuses.

Good luck!
