SOURCE: how do you check/add transmission fluid to a 2004

Hello! To check the fluid level, the first thing you want to do is get the fluid to operating temperature, by driving it for a bit and letting it shift through all gears. Once you've done that you need to make sure you park the car on a very level surface. Remove the front passenger wheel and the splash guard. From there reference the picture below to give you an idea where the fluid check plug is located - there is no dipstick on this transmission (4T45e). You will also see the fill plug location.

ffbd8af.jpg
If you do a pan drop and filter replacement only, the fill capacity is 6.9 quarts. You will want to use Dexron III type transmission fluid.

FYI - here are the torque specs for the pan bolts is 106 in/lbs and the check/fill plugs are both 124 in/lbs.

Hope this helps and good luck!

Why is the transmission not working?

Dirty tranny fluid/filter? Also could be low on tranny fluid...if not, you can add 1-2 bottles of Luca Oil Transmission Stabilizer fluid while motor running...please read bottle instructions...you do not need to drain any fluid for this...Hope this helps. (Nice Car)

(1999 pontiac grand prix 3.1 v6) how do I change my transmission fluid and filter?

You have to drop the tranny pan and drain the fluid into a large container. Get one of those large round ones from the part store, you will need one thatcan hold 10-12 qts of fluid. Some pans have drain plugs but most do not and you will have to loosen all the bolts untill you get the old pan to break the seal, leave the bolts on but loose enough to break the seal and let the fluid drain out of one side, then you can start removing the bolts. The filter is bolted to the underside of the transmission right above the pan. Simply remove the old one and bolt the new on on. Be carefull not to bend the pan and clean all surfaces of old gasket material before re installing new gasket.

How much to change a oil pan gasket for 2001 grand prix 3.8 gt

If you want to repair the oil pan I would also check lower engine mount for leaking oil and cracks in anti sway bar near fitting's. This due to engine mount is oil filled. OEM sway bar is made of tubular steel and they crack easy. Replacement sway bar is solid steel. Here's the kicker. When they pull the lower frame to service oil pan. The engine mount and sway bar are attached to that frame. A honest mechanic should only charge for parts ($35 for mount and $100 for sway bar) and maybe a extra hour. My mechanic did all in 5 hours. FYI gasket is only $35 bucks. Good luck

How much transmission fluid does a 1999 Grand Prix once I drop the pan and change the filter? Also, what kind of transmission fliud works best? Thanks

Transmission fluid does not have to deal with nearly the number of problems engine oil has to, with heat, water, acids, grit, etc., so it is not at all critical. In the old days, Ford always had a different fluid because they used different material for seals. But these days the all the fluids sold are great.

As to how much, that depends. There will only be about 4 quarts in the pan and transmission, but the total is more than twice that, and it can very anywhere in between, depending on how much fluid drains down from the torque convertor. It has a little flap that is supposed to stop drainage, but it always leaks down slowly anyhow. So there is never any set amount. You just have to estimate how much came out, put that much in to start, and keep checking and adding, with the engine running.

Where is the drain plug for the automatic transmission fluid on a 2000 pontiac grand prix gt 3800 engine

transmissions do not have drain plugs u must remove the trans pan assembly slowly from one side to the other and have a large container under it to catch all of the fluid then replace the trans pan gasket

Check the transmission fluid the car needs to be running and in park to do so, if it is low that could be your problem if not look at the fluid it should be red, if it's brownish and it has a burnt smell to it you may need transmission work
