On some BMW's of this vintage, lifting the handle would actuate the heated locks. So there was a microswitch on the handle itself. There's also a switch on the door jam -- part of the striker plate, at least on my E36.

SOURCE: 2004 BMW 525i Active Steering problem

The Active Steering system uses a Papst brushless dc motor to rotate the cage (ring gear) containing the planet gears a planetary gearbox at the bottom of the steering column. The motor effectively changes the steering ratio by increasing or decreasing the amount of gearbox output rotation relative to changes in the steering-wheel angle input. The resulting ratio depends on the speed of the car. For instance, a low 10:1 ratio gives high maneuverability for parking in tight spaces, with less than two turns of the steering wheel, lock to lock. To track straight at highway speeds, where even a small steering input can produce a quick sideways acceleration, the electric drive boosts the ratio to 20:1. Cars without Active Steering typically have ratios halfway between (specifically 14.1:1 for the BMW).
....
Now, if your active steering does not work , the car reverses back to power steering and the ratio is 15.1:1 so the car can be driven but the "active steering " is not working and still needs to be fixed.
It the unit needs to be replaced and your car is not under warranty, the repair cost may reach 5000 dollars.

The flashing light does not mean you have an alarm. They were not standard in the 3-series.
You can get one installed or if you want the dealer can program the lights to flash when locking and unlocking doors even with out alarm. This is called "acknowledgement without DWA"

HOW DO I PROGRAM A REMOTE CONTROL FOR A 1998 TOYOTA CELICA SRX

I found that the 97-99 ST204 Celica uses the same Alpine alarm used by the BMW E23 so I tried the instructions for that and it worked, so if anybody else needs this info here it is

My remote is P/N 08191-00900

1. Close all doors, trunk, and hood.
2. The security system must be in "disarm" mode. The key must be removed from the ignition key slot.

Enter Code-Learning Mode
3. Open the trunk and leave it open.
4. Open the driver's door and sit in the driver's seat.
5. Close the driver's door.
6. Cycle the ignition switch five times between the "off" position and position 2 (ignition "ON", all dash warning lamps will illuminate). The red status LED will illuminate continuously, and the siren will "chirp" once, to indicate that the code-learning mode has been initiated.

DO NOT START THE ENGINE

The ignition switch cycling in step #6 must be performed within ten seconds.

The sequence in steps #1-6 must be performed within 45 seconds.

Registering/Delete ID Code(s)
7. Open driver's door, (remain seated in driver's seat)
8. Close driver's door.
Edit: an extra step is required here for the Celica- cycle the ignition key once more from off to ignition on then back to off
9. Press and release any button on the remote you wish to register into the system. The status LED will shut off momentarily to indicate that one ID code has been registered.
10. Repeat steps 7 through 9 to register the remaining three ID codes.

Exiting Code-Learning Mode
11. Open driver's door, and exit from vehicle, leaving the door opened.
12. Close trunk.
13. Close driver's door. The LED will turn off and the siren will "chirp" twice.
14. The initialization procedure is now completed, test all remotes to confirm operation

How to set & cancel theft deterrent system or how to set & cancel security...

Theft deterrent system (on some models)

Theft deterrent system is designed to deter vehicle theft. The system flashes the turn signal lights and turns on the interior light or the signal lights only (depending on the model), and sounds security horn and vehicle horn when it detects abnormalities such as follows:

• Any door or hood is forcibly opened.
• The batter terminal is disconnected and then reconnected
• The system control is disconnected and then reconnected.
• Abnormal impact is detected when the impact sensor function is on.

The system flashes the turn signal lights and turns the interior light or the signal lights only (depending on the model), and sounds security horn and vehicle horn if someone attempts to damage or break into your car.

Setting the system

You can set the system with or without the impact sensor function. For details, see "Canceling the impact sensor" below.

1. Turn the ignition key to "LOCK" and remove it.
2. Have all passengers get out of the vehicle
3. Push the lock (set) switch on the wireless remote control key once. At this time, the turn signal lights flashes once and the security indicator light comes on.

The system is set after 30 seconds. At this time, the security indicator light start flashing slowly.

Once the system is set, you cannot start the engine until you cancel the system.

The system will not be set in the following cases.

• When any of the door is open; security horn sounds for 1 second, close the door and set the system again.
• When the hood is open; close the hood securely.

Canceling the Impact Sensor

The impact sensor can be cancelled to prevent false alarms from being triggered incase of the following conditions:

• When parked in the noisy area
• The vehicle body or glass is subjected to a strong impact from the (such as in highly pressurized car wash).
• When transporting by a car carrier or ferry.

To cancel the impact sensor;

1. Lock the door by pushing the lock (set) switch on the wireless remote control key once, and turn signal light flash once
2. Then push the lock (set) switch twice within 5 seconds. At this time, the turn signal flash 5 times to indicate the impact sensor function is disable.

The impact sensor is deactivated as long as the system remained armed.

Canceling the system

The system will be cancelled by the following two ways:

• Turn the ignition key from "LOCK" to "ON" position.
• Unlock any of the doors by pushing the unlock (cancel) switch

If the turn signal lights flash 3 times, the system has been alarmed. Check to see if there is any abnormality with your vehicle.

If any of the doors is not opened within 30 seconds, all doors will be automatically locked and the system will be set.

When the system is set

Activating the system; When the system detects abnormalities such as follows, it flashes the turn signal lights and turns on the interior light or the turn lights only (depending on the model) and sounds the security horn and vehicle horn of 30 seconds.

• Unlocking any door without using wireless control
• Any door or hood is forcibly opened.
• The battery terminal is disconnected and then reconnected.
• The system control assembly is disconnected and then reconnected
• Abnormal impact is detected when the impact sensor function is on.

Reactivating the alarm;

Once set, the system automatically resets the alarm after the alarm stops.

The alarm will activate again under the same circumstances described in "Activating the system".

Stopping the Alarm

The alarm will be stopped by the following two ways;

• Turn the ignition key from the "LOCK" to "ON" position.
• Unlock any of the doors by pushing the unlock (cancel) switch.

The system can be cancelled by these ways at the same time.

If the battery becomes discharged due to the vehicle being unused, for a long time etc., when the battery is recharged or replaced, the system will activate the alarm. If this happens, immediately unlock any of the doors by pushing the unlock (cancel) switch, and the alarm will stop.

Testing the system

1. Set the system
2. Insert a wireless remote control key into the key hole on the driver's door handle, and unlock the door.
3. Open the door, and an alarm will sound.
4. Stop the alarm by pushing the unlock (cancel) switch.
5. Repeat this operation for the front passenger's door.

Good luck.

1994 toyata camry the alarm goes off and will not let me start the car.

factory security does not have toggle switches as far as I know so it is probably an aftermarket system. Try one of two things, turn the toggle switch the oposite direction with battery disconnected. Reconnect the battery and try again, the horn will beep a few times when you reconnect. try starting. If that doesn't work, disconnect the battery and turn the key to the on position and reconnect the battery and the horn will sound but will go off get in the car and try to start. It should start and run normally. shut car off, then you should be able to return the toggle switch to the previous position If this happens again turn the toggle switch to the opposite position with the batterry disconnected and turn the key switch to the on position and reconnect the battery and start when started go see a service that installs aftermarket systems and they should be able to reset it security system Hope this helps

I have a 1996 3.8 liter camaro. I was driving my car down the road when the gages started jumping and i found out that problem it was the battery and aldernater well after i changed them problems i have...

Hmmm, a puzzle.

The only way to disarm these alarms is with
the factory remote or turning on the ignition.
To turn off the factory alarm.

Ok, do you have the remotes?
If so, let's ID the system.
Go to www.KEYLESSRIDE.com & use th fcc #s
on the back of it.

If not try this:

Programming Factory Security on GM Cars and Trucks
Instructions for programming the GM factory security systems that do NOT
disarm from the driver's door key cylinder. This programming is for the
cars and trucks listed below.

96+ Camaro
96+ Firebird
99+ GM Trucks
99+ GM Sport Utility Vehicles

Step #1 Turn the ignition on then off.

Step #2 Remove the radio fuse only (not the fuse that says acc/radio).

Step #3 Turn the key to the accessory position. When you do this you
will get two chirps from the door buzzer. Should you hear only
one chirp, your vehicle does not have factory security and these
instructions do not apply. You need to hear two chirps.

Step #4 Press the unlock switch on the door. This will give 1-4 chirps
depending on the program step. Continue pressing the unlock
switch until you get to the desired chirp setting.
1 Chirp - Security off
2 Chirps - Remote Only
3 Chirps - Factory Setting
4 Chirps - Passive Arming

Step #5 Turn the ignition off.

Step #6 Put radio fuse back in.

I bought a new Keyless remote for a 2007 Forester from a Subaru Dealer to replace an original one that went bad after 2 years. I have followed the directions in the owner's manual to program it, but can't...

IMPREZA: 2005, 2006, 2007 and
FORESTER: 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008
Check for Immobilizer key on Forester XT models only.
information is always subject to change and correction imp05keylessremote1.jpg
new remote for 2005 Imprezas.
This is not the same remote as the 05 Legacy/Outback remote which also has truck/gate release on the front and a red panic button on the back.
Lock: press Lock button for 2 seconds or so to lock car, and arm optional security system. The car with chirp once and turn signals flash for locked, 5 short chirps and signal flashes if any door is not fully closed. The dome light goes on for 15 seconds and ignition key ring (if present) will light for 30 seconds when unlocked.
Unlock: press unlock one time for driver's door, press again within 5 seconds to unlock all doors inkling rear gate (wagon). The system does not open the trunk.
Panic mode: press and hold lock button for approx. 3-4 seconds to activate Panic mode. I panic model the horn honks and turn signals flash until either the lock or unlock button is pushed again.
Finder mode: Press lock button 3 times within 5 seconds to activate Vehicle Finder mode. The horn will honk once and the turn signals will flash 3 times
Distance: works within approx. 30 feet depending on battery strength, nearby concrete walls and etc.
Audible Chirp On-Off: the system will chirp when locked or unlocked. To turn OFF the chirps, unlock the door and then push both lock and unlock buttons at the exact same time for 2+ seconds. There will be 2 chirps indicating the the audible is off. To turn the chirp back on, repeat the process and the system will chirp one time when it is back on.
Battery: as the battery ages it will only work as you get closer to the car. When a battery is replaced, the transmitter must be re-synchronized with the Keyless control unit. To synchronize, press the lock or unlock button 6 times.
Programming: 4 codes may be programmed.
Sit in driver's seat and unlock all doors. Open and close the driver's door
Turn the ignition key from LOCK to ON position 10 times within 15 seconds. Be sure to stop at both lock and on. The horn will HONK once to indicate transmitter programming mode is activated. Leave key in LOCK position and don't remove it from ignition.
You now have 45 seconds to complete the programming as below.
Open and close driver's door again.
Push either lock or unlock button on the remote you want to program. The horn will honk 2 times when successful.
To continue and program other remotes at the same time: open and close the driver's door and push lock or unlock on the remote. The driver's door must be opened and closed between each remote you want to program.
Done programming? remove the key from the ignition and the horn will honk 3 times.
DELETE old codes? Reprogram 4 times, it will overwrite old codes.
Alarm Security System: optional on all models. When locked there is one chirp (can be turned off, see above), the turn signals will flash and the red 'security' light will start to flash once every 2 seconds except for STi which flashes twice every 2 seconds.
There will be 5 chirps if a door, hood, and trunk or gate is not fully closed
You can also arm the system by using the power lock button on the driver or passenger door as you get out of the car and then closing the door behind you.
Disarm the system: push unlock for 2 seconds
Lost remote, alarm activated? When you can't use a remote to turn off the system: open the door with a key or try to start the car and the horn will start to honk. Turn the key on-off 3 times within 5 seconds and the alarm will go off and you can start the car. It's simple!
VALET mode: To set valet mode or just to disable the security alarm system: 1. unlock all doors 2. physically open the driver's door 3. hold the UNLOCK button on remote for 2+ seconds. The red 'security' light will then flash 2 times a second until the car is turned on.
System has been Tripped (except for STi): if you unlock the door with the remote and it chirps the signal light flash 4 times, the system has been triggered;
Identification mode: To find out what happened and why the system was triggered:
Open and drivers door, leave it open. Turn ignition key from LOCK to ON 2 times and then leave in LOCK position.
Tripped code: 1 security light flash: a door has been opened, 3 flashes when the impact sensor was triggered, 4 flashes when the ignition was messed with or battery disconnected

Car doesn't chirp when I lock it

In order for the ANTI-THEFT alarm to ACTIVATE, all doors, hood & trunk switches must be OPEN circuit (this means closed). Most often the problem is caused by the Hood Switch not closing all the way (meaning it is still grounded - not OPEN). Take the vehicle into a Hyundai Service Center (dealership), pay the diagnostic fee. They will tell you EXACTLY what the problem is and what's needed to fix it (parts, labor, tax, time-frame, etc.). This way you will find out which parts, if any, you need to fix it - perhaps fix it yourself.

2006 aveo alarm system

this happened to me and it drove me crazy for a few days. check that the hood is closed tightly. its held shut for the most part by a peice of metal with a screw on one side, a spring around it, and a nub looking shape that fits into the locking device above the bumper. When i finally checked my hood, the entire bit of metal had come unscrewed and was stuck in the locking device, leaving my hood held shut only by the safety clamp. remove it from the locking part and screw it back into the hood, closing it a few times to find the right distance to screw it in. lock your car and hear that chirp, that should fix it

if thats not the case then check that all of the doors are closed nice and tight... if the doors lock but the audible alarm is not armed then that is most likely the case

If ews2 alarm is fitted it need to be reset by computer. Any tampering will set it into protectction mode. Had similar problem. You can try the following but if it does not work get someonr with diagnostic computer. PREPARATION 1. Close all doors, trunk, hood and sunroof. 2. The security system must be in 'disarm' mode. The key must be removed from the ignition key slot. ENTER CODE LEARNING MODE 3. Open trunk and leave it opened. 4. Open the drivers door and sit in the drivers seat. 5. Close the drivers door. 6. Cycle the ignition switch 5 times between the 'OFF' position and position 2,(ignition 'ON', all dash warning lamps will illuminate). The red status LED will illuminate continuously, and the siren will 'chirp' once, to indicate that the code-learning mode has been initiated. ?Do No start the engine.? The Ignition switch cycling in step #6 must be performed within 10 seconds. The sequence in steps #1-#6 must be performed within 45 seconds. REGISTER/DELETE ID CODE(S) 7. Open drivers door, (remain seated in the drivers seat) 8. Close the drivers door. 9. Press and release any button on the remote you wish to register in the system. The status LED will shut off momentarily to indicate that one code has been registered. 10. Repeat steps 7 thru 9 to register the three ID codes. It is possible for the system to memorize a total of 4 different ID codes. As a new code is initialized into the memory, the oldest code is automatically deleted. If you had lost your remotes and wished to delete the lost remote ID codes from the memory, you could initialize the ID codes from a newly purchased replacement transmitter four times thereby deleting the previous ID codes from the system memory. EXITING CODE - LEARNING MODE: 11. Open drivers door, and exit from the vehicle, leaving the door opened. 12. Close trunk. 13. Close drivers door. The LED will turn off and the siren will 'chirp twice. 14. The initialization procedure is now completed; Test all remotes to confirm operation.
