The clutch pedal connects via cable to the bellhousing on the transmission. It can break and need replacement. It is a wear item. The clutch itself can wear out and need replacing. The shifter is connected via the shift linkage to the transmission. There are bushings in it that wear out and need replacing. They articulate as ball and socket joints in the linkage. The socket portion is the replaceable bushing. John Montgomery of FLU sells a replacement bushing kit. They can be a bit of a chore to get back in. If when the car is turned off, you try and it will not shift into gear but the shifter just feels all wobbly, the bushings are likely the problem.
The gear shifter doesn't connect to the clutch, the clutch pedal and clutch release fork connect to the clutch. The shift linkage connects to the transmission through a 3 part lever with 2 adjustment points.
