My gas pedal is very hard to push down, when trying to accelerate from a stop sign i have to push down the pedal very hard which in turn cases my head to ****. Any one else having this problem?
I'm having the same problem, and the dealer says it is a regular issue with the throttle plate needing to be "degunked" at a $280 price tag. Does this sound correct, and why wouldn't it be under warranty? I have a 2006 w/ 43,000 miles, and a 50,000 mile warranty.

We have the same problem with our 06 Tribute. Gas pedal sticks at certain times while trying to accelerate. This is very dangerous and needs to be addressed. Will discuss the solutions posted here with dealer and see what they say. We have the same problem with our 06 Tribute. Gas pedal sticks at certain times while trying to accelerate. It is a dirty throttle plate. $280 is an absolute ripoff for a cleaning, it is about 10-15 minutes of work. They are probably quoting replacing the throttle body which about a $150 part.
Got to Autozone and get "CRC Throttle Body Cleaner". Remove aire inlet hose at throttle body with a screwdriver. Spray a *small* bit onto throttle plate, use clean rag or qtips to remove gum/varnish. Spray pivots and also clean around perimeter of the plate. Take it to an independent mechanic if you are unsure of the procedure.
Check on the things that are attached to the gas pedal: the throttle cable and lining, the connection/control on the fuel injector/carburetor, the spring on that connection, the throttle cable and lining, and the pedal's mount itself. bad lubrication at any one of these points could be jambing the pedal, but if the pedal is only hard to push down and comes up alright it is probably a bad adjustment on the spring that returns the fuel injector/carburetor to idle. this spring is on the rotating part on the throttle body to which the throttle cable is attached
Some tributes have a throttle cable recall, some have carbon buildup on the throttle plate and sometimes the plastic throttle bodies stick and need replaced.

Look under the hood. you should find a part under there with two metal thin lines connected to it so that when you push the gas pedal, that part moves up, when released, it should go back down, have someone press the gas pedal and look for it right on top of the engine. is there something blocking it? wiring harness, etc.?
The air cond compressor is supposed to stop, but only if the gas pedal is pushed to the floor. If it is cutting off and the pedal is not all the way down, you could have a problem with the throttle position sensor. Cutting off during hard acceleration gives you a few more horsepower.
Inspect the cable to the throttle control mechanism under the hood? All all the cables in their proper tracks? Are any cables wrapped the wrong direction, or out of the in-line track?
It is a magnet. Not really, it is the rubber bumper that stops the gas pedal from coming up too far, it gets sticky and holds the pedal, you have to stomp on it to free it and then it is ok for a while, I sprayed mine with wd40 a few times, then finally put a glob of grease on there to stop it from sticking.
after checking fluid level is correct, try this, to see if it improves...
into drive, let car accelerate without any gas(do not touch pedal)to max speed (about 30/35mph).stop,then with 1/3rd gas pedal, accelerate to max speed(do not move foot)stop, then foot hard to floor, upto about 60mph,then stop.then only using a max of 1/3rd gas pedal, drive for about 15miles.you have just reset the drivetrain computer setings....the car is fitted with a computer controlled fuzzy logic gearbox,it will try to make you drive as eco as poss, but if used harshly the gearchange can be harsh up and down.....
if driven gently 4th will engage at 43 mph, with a slight clunk.
Replace the accelerator cable since it is worn and sticking. It will loosen up as you say altough someday it will jamb up while your driving it which will be a dissater in most cases
sounds like your brakes are taking too long to disengage. Your problem may not be your gas pedal. If your brakes are sticking it could be holding your acceleration back just a bit until the car gets moving again.
Not sure what spring you're talking about with the CAI. The CAI is just pipes and hoses, there shouldn't be a spring. Have you driven another 2002 neon before? I know with some cars, the gas pedals are a lot stiffer than others. My gas pedal on my Focus is a lot stiffer and more sensitive than my friend's aveo or civic. The spring I think you're refering to is probably the one hooked up to the pedal itself which is easy. Just pull out the old spring and put in a new one.
