Noisy water pump pulley, alternator pulley..timing belt tensioner
Last year I replaced the octopus hose, alternator and water pump. I installed new belts all the way around. Gradually I have the most unappealing noise coming from the front of the engine...wobley squeeling sound with a high pitch metal to metal whine...I cant drive the car with it. It used to go away after the car warmed up. I replaced the alternator belt. I have lubed belts and pulleys. I disconnected the ac belt and the supercharger belt and the noise is still there...I'm losing it !
I have the same car and the same problem. Metal to metal screeching sound when I start the car in the morning. Disappears when the water temperature is at its normal running temperature. If I switch the heating system off, the noise goes. My mechanic says he changed all the belts and doesn't know what causes the noise. Only way is to open up the engine, he says. But the car runs wonderfully well, the engine seems fine to me and this five months after the screeching started. So, in my opinion, the engine is fine. I love my car and drive it every day. Does anyone out there have a solution ? Thanks in advance for your help. George I have the same car and the same problem. Metal to metal screeching sound when I start the car in the morning. I had a similar noise twice, first time the local jag dealer replaced the supercharger after telling me it was the front bearing on that and only solution was a new blower :(. second time, different jag dealer exact same noise, they replaced the supercharger drive belt worked perfect. Re: noisy water pump pulley, alternator pulley..timing...
I have a 1995 xj6....same problem. I replaced the belts, water pump, and the alternator. Still does it. As I play with the tension on the belt (belt that drives water pump, alternator) it goes away and comes back. If I remove the belt, the metal to metal screech stops. I then, with just the belt, turned the main pulley on the front of the engine, and there was the sound! The main pulley has 2 belts that run on it. Also, 2 pulley tracks. They SHOULD move simultaneously and be super meshed. But the rear one moves on its own under tension until it warms up and I guess, the bushing maybe expands. Now.....how do I fix it??????
spot on, thanks. it was the bearing on the water pump pully which was grinding the metal. A simple repair was done. thanksspot on, thanks. it was the bearing on the water pump pully which was grinding the metal. A simple repair was done. thanks

Re: noisy water pump pulley, alternator pulley..timing...
Hello...New to here, and these XJ6 3.2 engines...Dropped some belts off one today for a friend. It did look to me like the alternator had a free wheeling pulley on it. These work like a normally pulley that will free wheel (spin) one way and lock up if they try to turn the other. I had a golf i had to diagnose a similar problem on a few years ago, when everyone had tried belts, tensioners, etc. I found that this pulley had seized so it didn't free wheel any more when it was supposed too. It made the worst screetching noise !!. I replaced the pulley (which in itself was about £50), and the car has now been noise free for 3 years. I know it sounds like a puzzling fix, when alternators always used to have fixed pulleys, but it worked !! Could be worth disconnecting the alternator belt and starting the car for a very short time (to avoid overheating due to no water pump turning) and seeing if the noise disappears with the alternator not spinning. Good luck. I would be interested to hear if this helps...Nolan.

Place the drain pan under the radiator drain plug, open the plug and allow it to drain. Close the plug. Loosen the four nuts on the waterpump pulley but do not remove them yet. Loosen the adjusting bolts in the alternator and the power steering pump with a wrench, push them away from the belts and remove the belts.
2Remove the bolts securing the fan shroud to the radiator support using a 10 mm socket. Remove the four nuts on the water pump pulley, then remove the fan and shroud as an assembly. Remove the bolts in the crankshaft pulley using a socket. Loosen and remove the crankshaft bolt using a socket.
3
Remove the top radiator hose. Extract all the 10 mm bolts securing the top and bottom timing covers and remove the covers.
4Install the crankshaft bolt temporarily. Use a socket on the bolt and turn the crankshaft clockwise until the mark on the crankshaft sprocket aligns with the timing mark on the block at the 12 o'clock position. Look at the camshaft sprockets and make sure the left sprocket has the "I" facing straight up and the right sprocket has the "E" facing up. At the same time, notice that there is a line on each sprocket adjacent to each mark--make sure they line up with the notch on the cylinder head at 12 o'clock. This allows for perfect alignment. If they do not come close to aligning, rotate the crankshaft one more time and they will align.
5Loosen the tensioner bolt and push the tensioner away from the belt. Loosely tighten the bolt to maintain position. Remove the belt.
6Install the new belt starting on the right side away from the tensioner. Keep all the tension on the right side. Loosen the tensioner bolt and allow it to apply tension on the belt. Do not tighten the bolt yet. Rotate the engine two turns clockwise and re-align the timing marks. Tighten the tensioner bolt to 35 foot-pounds.
7Install the timing belt covers. Remove the crankshaft bolt and install the crankshaft pulley. Reinstall the bolt and tighten. Install the radiator shroud and fan as an assembly. Place the fan on the water pump pulley, install the four nuts loosely, install the bolts in the fan shroud and tighten.
8Install the belts around the crank pulley, water pump pulley and alternator and pull the alternator up to tension the belt and tighten the bolts using a socket. Tighten the water pump pulley nuts using a wrench.
9Install the belt on the powersteering pump, pull the pump out to tension the belt and tighten the bolts. Install the upper radiator hose. Fill the radiator with antifreeze
Drain engine coolant into an appropriate container and retighten radiator drain plug.
Remove upper radiator hose.
Remove fan clutch assembly bolts.

Loosen power steering pump lock bolt and mounting bolt.
Remove drive belt from crankshaft damper.
Camshaft timing marks
Turn crankshaft until timing mark on front housing and the arrow "2" on the camshaft pulley align.
Remove 5 bolts and remove damper.
Remove timing belt guide from timing belt pulley.
Loosen tensioner lock bolt.
Pry tensioner away from timing belt and tighten lock bolt to relieve tension on the timing belt.
NOTE: Mark the direction of timing belt rotation on the belt if it is being reused.
Remove timing belt.
To Install:
Timing belt pulley timing marks
NOTE: Timing belt pulley timing mark and timing mark must be aligned.
Camshaft timing marks
NOTE: The arrow at "2" on camshaft pulley must be aligned with timing mark on front housing.
Timing belt installation
Install timing belt with minimal slack from timing belt pulley to water pump and from water pump to camshaft pulley.

CAUTION Do not turn crankshaft counterclockwise.
Turn crankshaft pulley 2 full turns clockwise and ensure timing marks are properly aligned.
Tighten tensioner lock bolt to 33 ft lb (45 Nm).
Apply a force of 21 lb to timing belt midway between idler pulley and camshaft pulley.
Deflection should measure 0.43-0.51 inch (11-13 mm)
NOTE: if timing belt deflection is incorrect remove timing belt and install NEW tensioner spring.
Install timing belt guide.
Install crankshaft damper pulley.
Install 5 crankshaft damper pulley bolts. Tighten bolts to 132 in lb (15 Nm).
Install power steering pump drive belt.
Adjust power steering pump drive belt tension and tighten lock bolt and mounting bolt.

I've found the Haynes Repair Manual that you can get at Auto Zone to be the best one there is. They have step by step instructions with pictures on repairing or replacing just about anything on your auto. You can get them for around $20 - 25. Is yours a 3 or 4 cylinder? Auto Zone has a new service where you can actually look up repair instructions for your vehicle with pictures. Here's the instructions for a 3 cylinder for your year, make and model:
