1997 Ford F-350 7.3 L Diesel..........brake failure

My brakes were fine and suddenly when I attempted to stop, the pedal went all the way to the floor with no brakes. I tried to pump them and got a little brake but no where near enought to stop. Afterwards I noticed a warning light on the dash.......something regarding brake failure''.

    There are no brake fluid leaks. I was told by a friend that it most likely will turn out to be a vacuum pump. What is your opinion on this?

With no leaks and a little braking action returning by pumping the pedal I would suggest looking into a master cylinder. Low brake fluid level in the master cylinder will cause the brake warning light to illuminate (possibly, also the ABS light).

If the truck has the 7.3L diesel, it will have a vacuum pump which supplies vacuum for all vacuum accessories. I believe if the vacuum level drops below 10 in. of Hg, the brake light will illuminate. If the vacuum pump fails you'll know it as the brake pedal will require quite a bit of effort to effect any braking effort.

I have the same problem with my 97 ford f350. I have replaced the vacuum pump the booster the master cylinder. Calipers drums pads are all fine. No leaks in the brake line if you have any suggestions on where to go from here please let me know

Check for leaks near the backs of the wheels and underneath the car. Also check the master brake cylinder for fluid.

    That is a very good possibility. Need vacuum for power brakes.

all you can do lacking tools is check fuses for BLOWN?!

The brakes on my 1997 Volkswagen Golf will periodically give out, the pedal going all the way to the floor, and then work normally at the next stop.
Hi Sdill, That must have been scarry! I suggest looking at the following:- Make sure there has been no separation of the brake linings from the mountings. Make sure that the rear brake assembly locators and retaining mounts have not come adrift. Check the front calipers and brake pads. Check the pedal movement and determine the normal movement with the engine running (car stationary) and the engine off and let me know the travel distance. Check for any signs of leakage of brake fluid on the inside of any of the wheels. Check for signs of leakage from the brake master cylinder. Check the flexible brake hoses for swelling or breakage. Check for broken or loose fitting of the hose to the brake booster and the one way valve operation of booster valve. When the failure occurs is there any braking effect at all? or does the pedal go to the floor with nothing happening? I'll be waiting for your reply. Regards John

You need to crawl under the truck and inspect each brake line for leaks. You also need to check wheel cylinders and calipers. The chances are pretty good that you will find a small leak in a line or a wheel cylinder leaking, pay close attention to the rear of the truck because that is normally where these problems occur. Sudden brake failure
You need to check the fluid in the master cylinder first. if it is empty you have a leak somewhere. if full then probably a bad master cylinder.brakes just being worn will not cause you to lose all pedal. while if they are worn should be replaced if they say you just need a brake job then be suspicous

I have a 95 Ford F350 with the 460 motor. It started running fine when cold but after it warms up it starts to run rough, lose power, and runs REAL rich. I'm only getting a little more than 2mpg.
