How do i diagnose what is killing my battery on a 2001 Impala. Do we know of anything that is recalled or a notorious culprit? This is my Girl's car, and i dont wanna just give up on it

For the longest time the vehicle will randomly lose all battery power. (preventing the car from starting) It happens overnight or in just a matter of hours. Sometimes goes weeks without incident, or can happen everyday for a month. I have a jumper pack that jumps the vehicle with no problem. Once i hook it up to the jumper, the car cranks like it has a new battery. Gone through 3 batteries. All work great for a while, then the problem comes back. Thought it may have been the stereo since the cd player was broken and the cd spun ALL the time. Replaed that with aftermarket Pioneer and proper wire harness. Problem still exists. Im looking for a way/proceedure to isolate the problem and either fix or bypass it. Im just at a loss with this thing. Dont know what else to try before the mechanic starts selling me parts. Thanks for your help. This ever happen to anybody else?

2001 Impala LS 105K mi My stereo amp under the rear deck was always warm even if the car sat wall night warm means power is being pulled even when the stereo is off. I pulled the power plug on it my battery quit dying. Must been something shorted inside the amp maybe the sensing circuit A quick fix I put a relay on the hot line gong to the amp so it goes on and off with the key. No more dead battery.

Well, this is how to check for a short ! hook a test light to negative post on battery, then hook other end to the neg, cable itself, . leave light hooked up, and remove negative cable from battery with light still hooked up to it. give the unhooked light and cable about 5 minutes. if light glows after neg, is disconnected from battery. you have a drain. to find it, leave light hooked up. start by pulling fuses when you pull a fuse and the light goes out youve found what circuit is causing the drain.

SOURCE: new battery but car dies

You need go to a NAPA parts store or equal store, and have them check, and show you your out put voltage on your alternator. If it is working fine it will be between 13.65 to 14.25 volts. Also have a 2 amp battery charge on the battery to get a good deep charge, fast charging only give a surface charge that doesn`t last.Without the alternator charging, the battery will run down and down and down. The battery will need the deep charge to restore it`s reserve power, not just surface power. If the alternator is ok,then you have what is know as a draw on the system, something is drawing enough volts to drain battery, even though key is out if ignition and nothing is left on.Cocks, and clock radios cause this a lot of the time, then there is delay dome lights that stay on,and in the day time you would not even notice. The alternator it self can draw a battery down while not driving the car.The voltage regulator or a bad diode in the alternator can do this.If I can help [email protected]

SOURCE: chevy cavalier wont start randomly! makes one

Ok then, from your description and the
make/model/year of the car you have there,
it appears you've reset the VATS.

The car's security immobilizer
reader at the key switch
does not recognize the coded
chip in the ignition key any longer.

You can try to put the key
in the ignition, turn to the on position &
wait at least 10 min like that.
(Do not turn off the key switch before
10 minutes as elapsed!)

Once done, the key is re-programmed and
should allow the fuel injectors to work again.
The car would start now if corrected.

In some cases, the VATS (GM'S VEHICLE ANTI THEFT SYSTEM)
will re learn the code this way, and will then
allow the restart, however if this does not work,
then you can simply tow it to any GM vehicle dealer
to have the service department re code it.

There is a permanent solution though.
Adding the PLJX Self learning Bypass module (59.95)
will bypass the PASSLOCK system in your vehicle
for good. See this at www.PASSLOCK2.com

Good luck I hope method 1 does the trick!

Here is the 30 min relearn:

Ignition keys relearn takes about 30 min to do. 30-Minute Learn Procedure 1. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF. 2. Attempt to start the engine, then release the key to ON; the vehicle will not start. 3. Observe the SECURITY tell tale light. After approximately 10 minutes, the light will turn OFF. 4. Turn OFF the ignition switch, and wait 5 seconds. 5. Repeat steps 1 through 4 - two more times - for a total of 3 cycles of 10 minutes. 3x10 = 30 minutes. The vehicle is now ready to relearn the Passlock Sensor Data Code and/or passwords on the next ignition switch turn from OFF to CRANK Important: Turn the Ignition Switch OFF. The vehicle learns the Passlock Sensor Data Code and/or password on the next ignition switch transition from OFF to CRANK. You must turn the ignition OFF before attempting to start the vehicle. 6. Start the engine. The vehicle has now learned the Passlock Sensor Data Code and/or password. 7. With a scan tool, clear any DTCs if needed. History DTCs will self clear after 100 ignition cycles. Without a scan tool you may have momentary starter interruptions while history clears itself.

My 2001 subaru impreza outback key is stuck in the on number 3 position. It will start and run but won't shut off. I killed the engine with the clutch and unplugged the negative on the battery.

Sounds like you need a new starter switch where you insert the key. Before you try tearing things apart try to shoot a little WD40 where the key goes in. Even with the key in shoot it around it. Might be just dry and jammed in there. I do that with car locks as well and it works.

2009 honda odyssey touring noise and smoke from the front wall of the engine compartment also killing battery's charge.

GO TO A TRUSTED SHOP BEFORE THE VEHICLE CATCHES ON FIRE!!! On that note it is a 2009, are you out of your warranty period? Have a shop check for a tsb or technical service bulletin or a recall. On that note, you have provided a very vague explanation and it could be anything from simple to dangerous.

2001 chevrolet impala hard to turn steering wheel

This is a common problem with the 2001 Impala. The intermediate shaft in the steering needs to be lubricated or replaced. There is also a recall on some Impala's. http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/recalls/results.cfm I suggest you take it to a trusted Chevy dealer and have this repaired.
