This means that it has detected a rich condition. You can get this with a dirty maf sensor suually caused by paper filters, a vacuum in a hose or connection or a fuel pressure problem.
Dirty mafs are easily cleaned even at home with maf spray cleaner. As long as you are careful not to physically touch the actual'sensor you can't hurrt it if it is still good.

1996 Volvo GLT 2.0 valve, got two codes need to know what to do to fix them P0440, P0172.

code p 0440 refers to evaporative emission (EVAP) system---malfunction===causes ---hose connections ---intake leak---EVAP canister purge valve
probably the purge valve needs replacing

code p 0172 refers to system too lean, bank 1===causes --intake blocked , EVAP canister purge valve ---fuel pressure ---EGR system---injector/s HO2S
you will notice that the purge valve is in both codes and it also affects the fuel pressure by not venting the tank correctly
That will account for the fuel pressure problem
I would seek advice from an accredited service specialist that works on your type of car but I would be paying attention to the common fault ( purge valve) before any thing else

I took my car to a mechanic for my check engine light. It came up with 9 codes. P0455, P0172, P0302, P0304, P0305, P0300, P0301, P0303, P0172. I have replaced all the plugs and wires and whatnot. (not sure...

All the P0300 codes are engine miss codes. The P0455 is a catalyst inefficiency code and the P0172 code is a rich mixture code. All of these could be caused by faulty oxygen sensors. What kind of car, engine size and mileage is it?

P0172 p0175 07 c230

Hi, these faults are for a rich self adaption mixture i.e. your exhaust lambda sensors are not detecting enough oxygen. A multitude of things may be causing this fault but I can advise on the most common. - remove the top engine cover and check the round seal at the back to ensure it is correctly fitted - ensure the air filters are not blocked - may be caused by a faulty Air flow/mass sensor - faulty lambda sensor (four fitted to this vehicle) - ensure spark plugs are ok

P0172 Fault

P0172 is a trouble code that is set when the ECU senses that there may be too much gasoline present in the air-fuel mixture of the engine. A proper air-fuel ratio of about 14.7:1 is vital to obtain maximum engine power and fuel economy

The fuel mixture grows rich and eventually, the code sets. An "over reporting" Mass Air Flow Sensor can be a common cause of a code P0172 and P0175. Essentially, this means that the Air Flow Sensor is telling the computer that much more air is entering the engine than actually is.

5 error cods on my 2002 Jetta GLS 1.8 Turbo Engine

P0420= Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold Bank 1
P0300=Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected
P0301=Cylinder 1 Misfire Detected
P0172=System Too Rich Bank 1
P2181=Cooling System Performance
you need to write these down,have someone clear the codes in the car,then go for short ride and recheck which if any code reappears.it's like domino's affect,one sensor can start a chain affect with the others.
