2006 Ford explorer/No heat /overheating

Hello, My wife's explorer has stopped blowing hot air when the engine is warmed up and in idle. it just blows cold air/ when I start driving it one of 2 things happen, it will start blowing hot air or it starts to overheat almost instantly, the gauge shoots up. sometimes if I turn the the blower off and on the heat kicks back in (blower works fine it blows cold air when the heat is on when this happens I know to start watching the temp gauge) and temp goes down. 2 times it has worked fine but when I was getting on a on ramp on the autobanh (highway) (right turn) the heat will stop blowing on cold air comes out and over heats again. I pull of to the side and it starts to work again heat blows out temp goes down. I am soldier stationed in Germany and before I get taken to the cleaners at the German ford dealer I would like to have clue whats going I tried explaining it to the German Master Mechanic at Ford and all he kept saying was ya ya heat problem you bring car we fix, any help would greatly be appreciated thanks in advance SSG Leon

I have the same problem with my 2005 Explorer. The engine heats up but I only get cold air until I start driving. I am taking it to dealership next week. I will let you know.

I am experiencing the same problem. Did either of you find a resolution? Mine just went out of warranty so I really don't want to get taken to the cleaners if I can avoid it.

my 06 explorer only heats up when driving not in idle.

  • Tnypeachez Mar 02, 2009

try adjusting the idle. I have the same vehicle, same problem. yet, if while sitting in park, you give it a little gas up to about 1 1/2 to 2 rpm, you get heat. Therefore I believe it is an idle problem

On several occasions I am driving and the car loses power (even though the engine revs high). The temp gauge shoots up and overheat light comes on.
I shut off the engine, wait a bit and its fine again.

Sounds like you are either low on coolant, or a head gasket failure.

Check the vacuum line on the top heater core hose ( under hood passenger side) you will see a 3/4 in hose with a small valve on it with a vacuum hose will fall off sometimes

I had a similar problem and it was a cracked thermastat housing. Temp gauge went and up and down... heat and no heat. Steam coming near the middle of the firewall.

Or it could be a faulty heater core, water pump, thermostat. pretty much anything in the cooling and heating system pretty much come into play.

We are having the same issue! We are stationed in England and we have spent about 6,000 USD to "fix it" and still it's not fixed. Also the air conditioner can not be run suring the summer. The car overheats every time! If I am driving slow, I can run the air. (20MPH or less) But if we get on the motorway I can't run the air. The blower is working fine. But my heat just went out 3 days ago and just blows cold air... I really just wanna wrap this car around a pole an be done with it!!

The heads are warped beyond their max. limit... the combustion gases are entering the collant passages and blocking coolant flow until the rpm increase this in turn overcomes that and coolant flows. There is a test to verify this and is fairly cheap to have your mechanic do (combustion leak test ) its a plastic container with some chemicals in it, you hold it over the radiator cap (removed ) while running at it detects HC`s in the coolant "Outta"

Suburban overheating and air conditioner blowing hot

If you have a viscous fan hub have it replaced as it is not working. The problem you have is that the engine is not driving the fan to draw air through the radiator when idling so the engine overheats . When moving the air flow from driving cools the radiator and so the temp goes back down. If you have electric fans have the codes read to find the fault or check why the electric fans are not working.

I have a 2012 ford explorer that only blows hot air while moving, but idling blows warm air.

Yeah, I'm from Minnesota, so know what you mean. You need to check the flow of air. A couple things. Is it any better if you have the re-circulator on? Also, does the temperature gauge vary any between idle and driving?

Try idle in neutral with the engine running at driving RPM - does that make a change?

I suspect a flow restriction at low RPM.
