CHEVY 1500 TRUCK HEADLIGHTS TURN OFF WHEN YOU TURN ON SWITCH

I HAVE A 1998 CHEVY 1500 EXT. CAB TRUCK. THE HEADLIGHTS WORK FINE AS A RUNNING LIGHTS BUT AT NIGHT WHEN YOU TURN THEM ON THEY TURN OFF BUT THEY WORK FINE IN THE SWITCH IS IN THE PARKING LIGHT POSITION AND THE HIGH BEAMS DON'T WORK AT ALL, THE INDECATOR DOSN'T EVEN COME ON ON THE DASH. I CHECKED THE FUSES UNDER THE HOOD AND THE FUSE PANEL ON BOTH SIDES OF THE DASH WITH A VOLT METER. I HAVE REPLACED THE LIGHT SWITCH .I HAVE THE REPAIR MANUAL BUT ITS NOT TO CLEAR EVEN THE WIRING SECTION.

I have the same problem. When I turn my headlights on, they turn off. I have changed the headlight switch and checked all the fuses. Any help with this is appreciated.

My speedometer doesnt work on my 1990 Chevy 1500 Ext cab. Is there a fuse for this or what could be some problems thanks!

the only connections that ar unplugged that i know of are the seat belt sensors, the drivers side horn and the wiper washer fluid pump.
    all fuses are fine
when the key is turned too the first position
the dash lights up fine showing milage and that its in the correct gear
then when the key is in the next position or when the truck is running the dash doesnt show what gear i am in, milage the 4x4 buttons do not light up or engage 4x4 the power windows do not work but the truck runs fine,
i just replaced the battery, checked the connections and everything is good as far as i can tell?

If you have replaced the switch, and it is still doing it it sounds like you definately have a short somewhere in your wiring. On the other hand if the dimmer is in the turn signal arm ( forward bright back dim ) the problem could also be there in the dimmer switch, such as a short being caused by that dimmer switch being faulty.Auto Zone and Discount Auto Parts both test a lot of your electrical problems for free, and/or may have some knowledge to more accurately pin point the problem. Not sure about Pep Boys or some of the other discount auto part chains.

If you have daytime running lights but when you turn on your regular headlight on they do not come on. Take the bottom of your steering column off (Two Small Screws) and look at the back of your turn/dimmer switch make sure that the light blue wire is connected. The wires will break off after years of raising and lowering your steering column.

1997 5.7l V8 ext. cab. How can I replace ignition switch?

You will need to take the steering column apart to replace the switches. You will need specific tools to do it also.

1998 c 1500 chevy the headlight do not work the running light work fine but when you trun on the headlightthey go out

sounds like the headlight switch needs to be replaced. Takes about 10 minutes. Just remove the two screws on the instrument cluster/dash area. This will help you to remove the plastic part of dash to access the switch. Unplug the old and plug in the new. You should be good to go.

I have a 1998 Dodge Ram 1500 ext cab 2wheel drive. The headlights work on Low, but when I switch them to High I have no headlights. All other lights work fine and the bulbs appear to be fine.

It would be either the headlight switch or the headlight relay. Try the relay first, it is easier to replace and less costly than the switch.

Check engine light on? Does it run normal driving it? Sounds like a vacuum leak. Check the gasket under the throttle body.
