What would cause transmission to shift up and down rapidly at low speed?

Occasionally when accelerating from stop car will upshift then downshift, then upshift, etc. repeatedly. Car has OD switch on shift lever. Turning off OD has stopped problem but might be coincidence. Check engine light does not come on. Seems to only happen when I have done extended stop and go driving.

Transmission does not downshift to 1st at a stop in D but manually selecting 1st works

It sounds like you are having an issue with your transmission not downshifting to first gear when you come to a stop. This can be caused by a variety of factors, including a problem with the transmission control module, a malfunctioning shift solenoid, or a problem with the transmission itself.
Here are a few things you can try to troubleshoot the issue:
  1. Check the transmission fluid level and condition. If the fluid is low or dirty, it could be causing the transmission to malfunction.
  2. Check the transmission control module for any stored trouble codes. These codes can provide valuable information about the root cause of the problem.
  3. Inspect the shift solenoids for any visible damage or debris. If the solenoids are damaged or clogged, they may not be functioning properly.
  4. If none of these suggestions resolve the issue, it may be necessary to have a professional mechanic diagnose and repair the problem. They will have the necessary tools and expertise to properly diagnose and fix the issue with your transmission.

The C4 transmission in my 1965 Mustang has stopped automatically shifting.

First thing to check would be the trans oil level
To little oil will cause it not to shift
And worse case the torque converter needs replacement

Where is 1994 Sportvan downshift relay location

There's no such thing as a downshift relay.Trans downshift is cable actuated.Go to the end of cable at the carb/throttle body, open the throttle fully by hand and depress the black button in the cable connection block, the cable housing will pop and when your driving will automatically reset to where it needs to be.Your done.

My 1994 ford thunderbird check engine light is on and the engine jerks when accelerating

That "****" could be a hard shift. There were problems with the transmissions around these years, and they would occasionally downshift, causing the RPM's to shoot up without you noticing, thus a hard shift. I have the same car and the issue can be fixed by replacing the two speed sensors on the transmission. They are easily replaced alone and don't require dropping the transmission or draining the fluid. They can also be easily attained at your local Napa or O'Reily's for $20 each.

Cold auto Transmission won't shift into 3 gear until after driving 1 mile or so (driving at about 35 mgh) pickup then downshifts from 3 to 2nd then back to 3rd a few times untill I get to work (7 miles...

Sounds like a bad speed sensor. Perform an ODBII scan soon. ECU should delay upshift until coolant temp senses warm up. It will not work right unless a signal is present from speed sensor.

95 geo manual tranny have had problem down shifting to 1st gear for couple months now 2nd is getting hard to downshift and upshift have replaced rubber bushings bolts etc.on shift linkage adjusted etc.

Sounds like your synchronization rings inside the tranny are wearing out try changing the transmission oil and adding product like lucas oil treatment , if it helps lay off the downshifting until your ground speed matches your engine speed for the gear your ring to go in. like really slow speeds ...

Overdrive button

from the car manual:

Tum the overdrive switch on for good fuel
economy and smooth driving. If engine braking
is needed in the "D" range or if repeated
upshifting and downshifting between the 3rd
and 4th gear is needed when climbing a
gentle slope, it is recommended that the
overdrive switch be tumed off. Tum the
overdrive switch back on immediately afterward.

When the overdrive switch is tumed on, the
transaxle will automatically upshift to the second,
third and overdrive gears. When the overdrive
switch is tumed off, the transaxle will not
upshift to the overdrive gear. For normal driving,
the selector lever should be left in the "D"
position and the overdrive switch tumed on.
If you need to accelerate rapidly, press the
accelerator pedal all the way to the floor. The
transaxle will automatically shift to a lower gear,
depending on the vehicle speed and load.
