SOURCE: Interior dome lights stay on.

I would ask a clarification request but it can't be done for this format. Anyway. Does the car have any type of aftermarket add on? Alarm, remote car start?
The Bonneville has a very sensitive electrical system. If there is an add on device there's a possibility that it has failed. There's more to installing an aftermarket device in a Bonneville than a simple install in a 'normal' car.
Another thing to check is the trunk and hood lights/switches. It's possible that the switch is broken or failed and is causing you the problems. Check to be sure that the trunk light and under hood light turns off when closed. They do take quite a beating over time.
Hope that helps.

SOURCE: I have a 2000 Pontiac

This could be an anti theft security issue. This happens all the time in GM's. The anti thefts are known to fail and cause the car to not start, stall while driving, or start for 1-5 seconds and then die. A good indication that the security is failing is if you see a light on the dash that says SECURITY or a picture of a car with a padlock thru the window. This link explains the problem, symptoms, and some DO IT YOURSELF solutions. http://vatspasslockpasskeysecurityhelp.yolasite.com/

  • Hi, I can help.
  • What is going on is that wire harness that spans between the drivers door and. the frame has a cracked or broke wire in there and it is sending bad information to the computer.
  1. You need to splice open the casing for the wire harness and look for a broke wire[s].
  2. When you find the broke wires just splice a new piece or wire in between the broke points and insulate them real well.
  3. If non appear to be broke then check inside the insulation of each individual wire.
  4. The boot on either side of the harness may need to be remove to get a further look at the wires.
  • Whats happening is the computer is being shorted by (I suspect a bad ground wire) in that harness. When you remove the battery cable and put them back on you are resetting things until the same problem is detected again.
  • By default them wire crack from the door opening and closing for years. This usually starts out as a pinched wire with intermittent malfunctions and then it happens more often, as you are explaining now.

  • I have seen where the battery itself had issues and caused this same issue but you are saying it has bee getting progressively worse for some time now. i am pretty confident what the problem is.
  • This can also be a bad ECM but the progressiveness leans me much more towards a wire[s] in that little harness.

  • If you have any comments please feel free to leave them here.
  • Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa.

Regards, Tony

You are talking about interior lights, right ?
As long as the on-time is under a minute or two, its normal.
The lights are supposed to go off as soon as you start the van tho.

No. my dome light won't shut off. how do I shut it off

Check the light switch on the dash and see if it is turned on for the dome light, if so turn it off and the dome light should go off. Check if the dome light it self has a on/off switch button on it. If this was not the problem, check the push button switch at each door by opening the door and holding the button in, if you have a delay light system on your car, you will have to hold the button in for awhile till it kicks the dome light off. If this did not fix the problem, remove each door switch and unplug the wire going to it, use a volt meter to check if the switch works on and off when you push the button in and out, if the switch is bad, replace it, you can buy them at a local auto parts store or dealer. If the switch was bad just leave the wire unpluged till you can replace it, this way the dome light should go out

I have a 2000 pontiac sunfire an the radio seems to stay on even when the car us turned completely off. What does that mean because it keeps killing my battery.?!

The most likely answer is that your vehicle's door pin switches aren't working. When you open the driver's door, does your dome light turn on? Your radio works with the vehicle's data bus to stay on until the door is opened; if the system can't tell that the door has been opened, then it won't turn off. The door pin switch should be mounted at the front of the door opening.

My dome lights stay on for about 15 to 20 minutes and my radio shuts off now when i turn the car off, it normally stays on when car is turned off until you open a door.

This is normal...........The dome light will give you time to collect your belongings and the radio or music of your choice will stay playing for about 15 min unless the door opens..............It is just the way cadi rolls........Hope this helps.

Whether I am driving or when I shut down my car and close the doors, the dome light stays on until the 20 minute shut off happens.

If you're HHR is a 2006 (maybe 2007), looking up at your dome lamp, there is a three position switch (OFF-ON-ON w/ DOORS), check that the position of this switch isn't ON. On later models, the dome lamp ON-OFF is controlled through the instrument panel dimmer on the center of the dash above the radio.
