How do I clean the Plenum/Air Intake system

If you are just cleaning the throttle plate/bore, use carb cleaner in a spray can ( this will also clean some of the plenum as it is injested into the vehicle ) and remove the air intake hose from the air cleaner to the throttle bore assembly. OPen the throttle plate by hand and spray cleaner inside ( with vehicle not running ) and remove any carbon/oil deposits that are around the throttle plate. If the plate area is very dirty/black in color, you can use a toothbrush to help clean. When vehicle is started, it may run rough until all the extra cleaner is burned from the intake. If you want the entire upper system cleaned, you will require a fuel injection cleaning machine that most shops will have. The do it at home procedure as mentioned works well

What is the code 171 mean on my dodge ram 1500

P0171 Chrysler - Fuel System Lean

Possible causes
- Intake air leaks
- Faulty front heated oxygen sensor
- Ignition misfiring
- Faulty fuel injectors
- Exhaust gas leaks
- Incorrect fuel pressure
- Lack of fuel
- Faulty Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor
- Incorrect Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) hose connection

Tech notes
If the P0171 is combined with the P0174 code, it's very likely that the problem is caused by an intake leak. If there are no intake leaks, the next step is to replaced the air filter and clean the air flow meter. If the problem persist the front oxygen (O2) sensor may need to be replaced.

When is the code detected?
- Fuel injection system does not operate properly.
- The amount of mixture ratio compensation is too small. (The mixture ratio is too lean.)

Possible symptoms
- Engine Light ON (or Service Engine Soon Warning Light)
- Excessive Fuel Consumption

P0171 Chrysler Description
With the Air/Fuel Mixture Ratio Self-Learning Control, the actual mixture ratio can be brought closely to the theoretical mixture ratio based on the mixture ratio feedback signal from the heated oxygen sensors 1. The Engine Control Module (ECM) calculates the necessary compensation to correct the offset between the actual and the theoretical ratios.

In case the amount of the compensation value is extremely large (The actual mixture ratio is too lean.), the ECM judges the condition as the fuel injection system malfunction and light up the Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) (2 trip detection logic).

  13. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section. CAUTION High pressure lines deliver diesel fuel under extreme pressure from the injection pump to the fuel injectors. This may be as high as 23,200 psi.(1600 bar). Use extreme caution when inspecting for high pressure fuel leaks. Fuel under this amount of pressure can penetrate skin causing personal injury or death. Inspect for high pressure fuel leaks with a sheet of cardboard. Wear safety goggles and adequate protective clothing when servicing fuel system.
  14. ate assembly to timing belt inner cover.
  15. Disconnect A/C lines at compressor.
  16. Remove charge air inlet hose.
  17. Remove the EGR airflow control valve from the intake manifold.
  18. Remove high pressure injection pump to fuel rail high pressure line.
  19. Disconnect high pressure injection pump quantity control valve electrical connector.
  20. Disconnect fuel supply and return lines at high pressure injection pump.
  21. Remove alternator to intake manifold bracket.
21 Remove high pressure injection pump retaining nuts and remove pump.

Care must be taken not to bend the brake vacuum tube when removing high pressure pump.

Check the timing. If it is fluctuating you most likely need to replace the timing built. Another possible problem could be a vacuum leak or clogged air intake. If the motor is fuel injected clean the fuel injectors and fuel injection system.

2001 chevy tahoe spitting and sputtering on take off how do i fix it

Usually something like this is caused by a need for maintenance. The most overlooked maintenance item on today's cars other than servicing the trans is the fuel injection system. I don't know if you have the 6 or 8cly, but either way, remove the black air tube that goes from the air filter box to the intake. look inside the intake. You will see a butterfly. It will be easier if you have a friend in the car pushing down the accelerator. Use a can of "Fuel Injector Cleaner" NOT CARBURETOR CLEANER", (cARB CLEANER CAN DAMAGE THE FUEL INJECTORS, DO NOT USE THAT) If you can get your figures in there use a clean soft rag. Spray the fuel injector cleaner in the intake soaking it good. The spray some on the rag and clean all around the butterfly area. It works better with a gian q-tip, but they are hard to find. When this is done, make sure all your electric items are pluged in with the intake hose off. Have someone in the car and start it While the engine idles at 1500-2000 RPM's spray the rest of the can into the intake in 3-5 second bursts in a circular motion.

This should help, but it is the first step in a proper tune up. You want to do this before you replace the plugs and wires. If you are at or around 100,000 miles it is time. Use platnum plugs, Not double or triple, and good qualitity wires. be very careful you dont cross tread. A good repair shop should be able to do all of this at a reasonable price.

hope this helps

My 1998 ford taurus wagon misfires when I step on the gas at 30mph and about- occassionally the service engine soon light blinks

clean the MAF sensor heated wires inside MAF with carb cleaner gently with a toothbush first. Then disconnect battery for 1 hour and reconnect and drive for 10 miles so computer can relearn clean MAF sensor.

Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor The mass air flow sensor (MAF sensor) (12B579) :
  • is located between the engine air cleaner (ACL) (9600) and the throttle body (9E926) .
  • uses a hot wire sensing element to measure the amount of air entering the engine. Air passing over the hot wire causes it to cool.
  • sends an analog voltage signal to the powertrain control module (PCM) (12A650) to determine the intake air mass. The powertrain control module will then calculate the required fuel injector pulse width in order to provide the desired air/fuel ratio.
The mass air flow sensor hot wire sensing element and housing are calibrated as a unit and must be serviced as a complete assembly.
