When accelerating this noise seems to go away. At speeds of over 30 mph, can't really hear it. When I go over bumps I can hear it. When braking it gets worse. Now when going 20 mph it is bad and if I turn right, it makes the same sound as when I am breaking. If I turn left, it goes away. A friend said maybe transfer case, but if so why would it stop when I turn left.
Check the disk brake pads. At slower speeds you can hear them squeak because there is less wind and road noise. The other possibility could be a bad u joint at the ends of the axle half shafts on the front differential. Check both. I really doubt it is the transfer case. You transfer case is engaged all the time. The axle is locked and engaged when you flip the lever by a vacuum motor on the axle shaft on the differential.

You can check fluid level by removing the rubber plug in the cover. Fluid is full when on level ground, it is just at the edge of the hole (or very close) if you are already getting noises out of there, you can remove the cover and inspect gears for wear or breakage. If you find a large amount of metal debris in the lube it tells you something bad is going on back there. Although rebuildable, it's not a home job...requires exact settings in order to operate properly. You can find good units far cheaper than even a gearset costs in any scrapyard. to match ratio, count the teeth on the ring gear and the pinion gear. the replacement MUST have the exact same number. Before swapping diffs, check all back there to make sure noise is not from somewhere else.

You might have the lower swing arm bushing checked mine slid of the bushing but stayed in the cradle on the passengers side.Only made noise when ibacked or turned sharp left.

Check the u-joints on the front axle that goes from the t-case to the front diff.
Better yet check all u-joints.
SOURCE: when in 4wd it makes a noise
Sounds like the transfer case is not fully engaging itself. you will have to check this out. This will only cause more damage if left alone. make sure the wires are connected and tight. if the wires are OK, the internals are likely to be malfunctioning. replacing or repairing the transfer case will fix this.
SOURCE: noise from front end more so when you are turning
You also could have received a bad axle. Sometimes the rebuilds don't hold good tolerance and can make the same noise you are trying to get rid of. Is it full-time 4wd? Maybe the driveshaft ujoint also.

Sorry, I forgot to add that I did the brakes thinking it was this originally. This is not a squeak, but rather a harsh grinding noise of metal on metal. I checked the the differential, u joints and they seem fine. The hubs on the wheels feel fine too, no play. The noise seems like it is coming from under the center, right underneath the shifter. I know noise travels, but this is confusing. Any other thoughts?
P.S. Thanks for helping
Ok...So I gave up and gave it to another mechanic as I could not stand it anymore and needed someone else to think differently then me. He and his son looked at it, could not figure it out. He took it to a transmision shop, they could not figure it out. I kept researching the internet and after 10 hours I came across someone that had something similar to me.
Their fix also fixed mine. We were so hell bent that it was something mechanical that we overlooked the obvious. The Quadr Trac transfer case cable has a clip that hold the cable up. The clip broke and was rubbing on the drivetrain. When we where lifting the jeep up, the drivetrain would of course drop down, not showing us it was rubbing. So I zip tied it back up and the noise went away.
This noise should never sounded so intense, but it did.
