If the D4 light is flashing, you have a transmission control failure and you need to get your transmission and transmission control system checked out.

SOURCE: d4 light stays on and car has no pep

Hello,
I have a 1992 honda accord that had this same problem and would like to save you hours of research! First, out of all the things I read about people that had this same problem -95% of these ended up concluding that they did indeed have a bad TCM (transmission control module) also sometimes called TCU(transmission control unit)and replacing this was what fixed their problem! On hondas, they have a separate computer for just the transmission alone(TCM)! I read several articles on common problems with this year model and one of the main ones they listed was the TCM! I believe it said the main reason being is because there are 3or 4 little parts on the tcm that are made cheap and usually end up breaking or shorting out(I dont remember word for word)! There are several other things that could make your tcm not work properly! One of these would be your selinoids! If one or all of them are not working properly this will cause the tcm to not work correctly! How I figured out for sure that it was a faulty computer and not anything else was by testing the selonoids,(this was easy) also by doing a amp check ,and several other troubleshooting test on the tcm itself(found the diagram and troubleshooting info for this at the library in the MITCHELL vehicle repair guide for our year of honda!) This was also not very difficult and did not take alot of time or tools! F.Y.I. Your TCM is going to be located in the front passenger floorboard-you have to remove your trim and pull up the carpet to locate it! ALSO...VERY IMPORTANT..found this out the hard way-Your tcm is going to have a number on the either the outside of it or the backside of it(mine was on the backside so we had to unhook all the wiring in order to get this number)that you will have to have in order to make sure you get the correct TCM for your car! Knowing the make and model is not enough- due to the fact that honda has 2 or 3 completely different TCMS that they used for our same make and model! So, you have to make sure you get the right one because they DO NOT INTERCHANGE! I actually had my boyfriend whos a mechanic do all of the work ,so if you have any more questions or need a more detailed answer you can email me and I will be happy to ask him and get back with you ! I hope this has been helpful! ******ONE MORE THING: A new TCM is about 700 dollars! I bought mine at a salvage yard for 75dollars with a 30 day warranty! I found used TCMs that had a three month warranty for less than 200! But make sure you have atleast 7days or some type of guarantee so that you can make sure it works properly(alot of salvage yards do not individually test these to make sure they are working)! I had to call quite a few places to find mine because this is a common problem it seems for alot of people! So, it might take a little bit of patience but it is definitely the cheaper and more practical way to go! Also, the TCM took only about 15 or 20 mins to put in(mostly just hooking up alot of wires)!

SOURCE: 92 Accord Automatic shifting

Has anyone change the transmission fluid and used anything other than Honda ATF-Z1. If so, have the fluid/filter changed in this car and use only Honda Fluid. This is the only fluid that you can use in a Honda. Even if you have used the correct fluid an fluid/filter change may help. If that is not the case then I suggest you seek out a trusted professional.

SOURCE: 92 honda accord lx D4 flashes

you have a transmission fault the D4 light blinks to tell you that there is a transmission problem when the light is blinking the transmission computer put the transmission into limp home mode so it will not shift normally and you should try not to drive it very far when it gets to this stage you need to have the transmission codes check to pin point the problem

SOURCE: d4 light flashing and car wont start 92 honda accord

You more than likely have a problem with the TCU (transmission control unit). It may also be other things. You need to seek professional help before spending money on a TCU that may or may not be the problem. It takes an expert to diagnose this problem.

1991 honda accord wagon...the S keeps flashing off and on seems to jump between sport mode and standard...what could this be?

This is your transmission control unit telling you there is a problem. I have another post here (http://www.fixya.com/cars/t5554380-92_honda_accord_d4_light_flashing) with details on how to diagnose. This link says "flashing D4 light" but the issues it the same. 90-91 accords have flashing S lights for TCU errors, and 92-93 have flashing D4 lights.

'92 Accord TCU error 14?

If it feels like you only have 2 gears, and 1st is gone, then it sounds like the transmission computer needs to be replaced. Very easy self done job.
