Im sorry, but i'm afraid you have misunderstood, i believe the 4.0 engine has a timing chain set-up, not a belt and is not serviceable under routine maint. only if mechanical problems arise. do you mean the accessory drive belt? once again, sorry, didnt mean to sound like a wiseguy! a retraction would be appreciated.

Check engine for good tune up, may those spark plugs are fouled out beyond belief, its always best when changing motors to use known good parts....

sounds like could be a carb providing an excessive amount of fuel any signs of black smoke from exhaust ), overdue need of spark plugs, or if everything proves ok, a faulty ox sensor

belt may run water pump if loose or off will cause engine to overheat!!take to parts house most will let you use the scan tool it will tell you whats going on!! good luck!!!!
I found this picture online. I believe this to be your engine but the were two engines to pic from and Im afraid Toyota is not my strong point. The other pic had more gears and keeps the chain lower on the engine
