Maybe. But it may not have been leaking that bad. So many people drive around with this type of leak, and it is so expensive to fix he may not have bothered to tell you. Also, he may not have the proper skill to so the repair.
In the future if you want your mechanic to tell you everything that is wrong, ask him to do a full inspection. Even than a leak can start after he looks.

SOURCE: My BMW seems to be leaking oil from the rear underside

the leak is most likely coming from either the differential cover gasket or the input flange that the drive shaft attaches to, this is called the pinion seal.

SOURCE: 2007 530xi Sports Wagon: where is battery located on 2007 bmw 530 xi...

If it's not under the hood, then the only other place BMW places their batteries is in the trunk. Since it's a Sport Wagon, pull up where the rear spare would be and it will be there, usually on the right hand side.

Hope this Helps,

SOURCE: Bluetooth passkey--'06 530XI--can you find the passkey?

The number was on a white card stuck in with the manual binder. Or if you don't have it, its located in the trunk, behind the left nav access panel on a silver "TCU" module about the size of 2 vhs tapes stacked together. if you look at the eject button on the nav player its located just to the right and is installed on about a 45 degree angle.

there is a white lable with the "PK" on it. i used a small telescoping mirror but you can also slightly pull back the trunk liner above the unit and it will be easily located. If any of this options works go to Bmw dealer for service and we found it in car computer.

2007 bmw 530XI wagon. 44K miles. turning wheels once the vehicle is started produces very loud and annoying hum. My assumption is the power steering pump, but unsure if it's related to a slight...

it s acceptable in full lock to lock turns to hear the humming with normal wight steering
and it is acceptable to drive the car without any power steering assist until have it fixed don`t be worry keep an eye on steering fluid

I have a 2003 BMW 325i. We had the oil changed and had discovered a drop of oil under the car the day before. The repair shop replaced our oil pan plug because it was cracked. Today we have 5 or 6 drops...

It could well be a PVC valve. The PVC plumbing on e46s is not one of BMW's best designs, and it needs to be cleaned out every 100k miles if not sooner.
Not likely a rear main. I have never seen a failed rear main seal on a 6 Cyl BMW.

Are you sure it is not power steering fluid? I would be surprised if a 2003 were not leaking a little power steering fluid by now if the hoses have not already been replaced.
Another common oil leak is the hose that feeds oil to the VANOS.
If the leak is toward the rear of the engine, I would look for a valve cover gasket leak.
The service engine soon light is almost certainly unrelated to the oil leak.
