My 1997 subaru impreza squeals badly and then engine smokes

My engine leaked alot of anti freeze. First I thought the thermostat had stuck. I replaced the thermostat. When I start the car, the engine squeals real bad. All the belts are turning. Thought it may be the air conditioner or ac clutch. Anyway I leave the engine run for about 5 minutes and smoke comes out from the engine. I do smell anti freeze also but do not see it leaking.

Hi this sounds weird does the smoke come out from the front engine covers? the squealing could be the cambelt trying to turn a semi or completly ceased waterpump which would cause the smoke after a while, also without the waterpump working properly the engine will leak water and anti freeze out the overflow and overheat really quickly

SOURCE: smoke from the left side of the engine

probably leaking rocker cover gasket ,oil slowly lands on exhaust, ive got one and had exactly the same symptoms and rocker cover gaskets were the issue

SOURCE: replaced timng belts on 1994

I dont think you can hurt it. But the timing marks have to be perfect. So double check your work.

I have a Subaru Impreza 1989.. I'm having problems

Sometimes a faulty gas cap can set this code. If you ever replaced the filler cap with an aftermarket cap, get an oem gas cap from Subaru. If that isn't the problem, a shop could run a smoke test of the evap system to look for a leak. Fuel vapors are escaping from the evap system somewhere between the gas tank and the charcoal canister and the engine. If you can smell gas at times from front or back of car it may help you to start looking for the leak, but a smoke test is often required.

I noticed my subaru leeking oil, i checked the oil level and was fine and eveytime i drive fast there is a small bit of smoke and burning smell from the engine can anybody help???

Hi, you may have a valve cover gasket leak that is dripping on the exhaust manifold. I would inspect the valve cover area for oil spots and rim leaks. The smoke is coming from the dripping of the oil on the manifold or, lower exhaust pipe.

Please rate and god bless:)
