I would think catalytic converter going bad...When they go bad that's one of the things a car does....And it's a old enough car to be having problems from the converter... Sometimes the car will run just a little hotter than normal but want run totally hot..I would have it checked...That might be the reason he's getting rid of it..But It will run good again if you replace it...But it's not cheap..Also keep the old one...There worth more than scrap medal...But this could be the issue.
Could be a lot of reasons. Throttle body is possible, but could be clogged exhaust, valve timing, vacuum leaks, bad maf, the list goes on and on. Have a mechanic diagnose for you.

Have they replaced the coil on #5?? There are no plug wires on this motor. They have ignition coils mounted atop the sparkplugs called COPs. If a misfire is still detected, possible coil malf or cam or crank sensor malf. Hopefully this helps
