My 2002 tribute that suddenly lost power today. What could cause this?

When driving the vehicle tonight I noticed it had dim dash lights shortly after all of warning lights came on starting with the ABS light then it lost power and I had to coast into a parking lot close by. After letting it sit for a few minutes, I was able to start the car up and get home but it was running sluggishly and the dash lights were still dim. I changed the battery about 3 months ago so I know it shouldn't be that.

Batteries have no guaranteed life so it could be a battery
I would consider the problem more likely to be a loose battery terminal, faulty alternator , drive belt condition or tension and a problem voltage regulator
all of the above can be checked and tested by an accredited auto electrician

When that light comes on, it is indicating charging system problem which could mean alternator not charging for one reason or another like loose belt, faulty alternator, or yes, bad battery or connection at battery, for example. First & easiest thing to do is check all your connections to battery, which you've probably done, and make sure they're tight & clean. Make sure belt driving alternator is good & tight, and in good shape. Now boost the vehicle to get it going & test voltage at battery, after you take cables off. My guess is in your case, the voltage will begin to go down, indicating a bad alternator, that will need to be replaced.

These vehicles have a recall on the ABS system for faulty wiring. You may want to check with your local dealer to see if your vehicle is included.

First suggestion is to take out the 20 amp fuse before you have a massive wiring problem from a burnt harness. IT has a 10 amp fuse to protect the wiring and anything over will set the car alight if there is a dead short.. Next run the fault codes to find out why the ABS light came on. Have a check done on the alternator and check the alternator drive belt and tension. I suspect that the alternator has insufficient out put to handle all the electrics and that means either the alternator or a failing battery.

Dim dashboard lights and problem starting

Could be a loose or dirty battery connection, poor battery, or alternator. Check all the cables and connections to your starter. Clean your battery posts. Have your alternator and battery checked. It sounds like you are either running off just the battery or just the alternator. One of them is not right.
