There is an idler pulley and tensioner on the serpentine belt. They can cause this noise.

SOURCE: 1996 Chevy Lumina Sedan Whining noise from engine

The pattern you describe is consistent with an alternator going bad. Maybe the fields are already rubbing together. Test it this way: Start the car and leave on idle, when the whine is worse, then start using up electricity, by increasing the demand. Turn on AC, then lights, then full blower and then high beams. If there is a change in the whine, then either alternator or voltage regulator is the culprit. When a compressor pulley bearing is bad, noise shifts just by turning AC on and off.

Noise coming on an exhaust camshaft on a 1g fe vvti engine

Most common camshaft noise sounds like a noisy tappet. If the noise fades as the speed rises it probably is a noisy tappet but if the noise becomes more harsh or pronounced and maybe even louder as the speed increases, it is usually a sign a cam lobe is losing it's peak and becoming "squared off".

Kind of sounds like tire noise, did you recently change the tires? If not I would have the front wheel bearings and breaks checked

I have a 1999 chevy suburban that has a squeek that sounds like a belt slipping. I have changed all the pulleys and belt except for the pulley on the front of the water pump. The sound gets louder as I...

Being careful not to get tangled in the belt, use a long screwdriver or other lng piece of metal and touch each part that is being turned by the pulleys (water pump, alternator etc. hold the other end to your ear. When you find one that is noisy, that one likely has a bearing going bad. So, if the noise is at the alternator, change it etc. (all parts make some noise...you are looking for the one making a lot of noise)

I have a knocking noise at idle in my 97 Chevy Lumina...It goes away when I accelerate. What could this be?

after oil change' check oil pressure cold and then hot , then idle, if it goes up when reving it hot, thats good sort of,then if it goes way to low at idle and knocks, check idle speed. Fix it if so, still there , in the old days we would be cheap and put in a high flow oil pump, now I drive the "siht" out of a cheap car to see how long they last! It will supruse you> seen a 97 lumina with 400,000 km. slight knock and still going.

There is a humming sound coming from the front end of my 1999 oldmobile alero. Only happens when the car is moving. I dont hear itat idle or even when pushing the gas at idle. could it be my transmission...

Hello! If the humming noise is speed related(gets louder as vehicle speed increases)check front wheel bearings. If the noise goes away when turning one way or the other then it will most likely be in the front wheel bearing. If you turn the wheel(while moving)to the right and the noise goes away it is on the right side. If you turn the wheel to the left and the noise goes away its on the left side. Hope this information helps!

Ford Saginaw pumps are notoriously noisy power steering pumps. I have not had any that were not noisy. This is especially true when turning the steering wheel without the vehicle in motion.

It sounds like you may have a bearing race out of spec in your front hub assembly. Check for bearing play by pulling with your hands on each tire--if there is a clunking noise---replace the bearing.
