idle air control valve....temp fix is to take off the air hose leading to it and spray with wd40...long term fix...go on ebay buy the part for 40-50$ and take 5 mins to replace it. the dealership will try to charge 900+

Not sure if you ever fixed the problem but it sounds like a TPS throttle position sensor sometimes if you locate on the throttle linkage it will have a plug going to it disconnet it and see if the car accelerates most of the time it will stall if the check engine light is on you can take it to a Autozone if you have one near by and they will run the code amd let you know what part you need I would fugure it would be the TPS or Air Flow sensor both very simple to replace yourself.

Is the engine lite on? if a misfire shows, and the plugs are new, could be coil or wires. how does it idle? maybe air leak between mass air flow sensor and throttlebody.

autozone will scan for free, they are just unable to clear it, if that helps any.

Is this a 2.4? I had one that the balance shaft belt broke and made the timing belt jump. Had the same symptoms as you. Vibration comes from the unbalanced oil pump shaft, sputtering could come from the timing being off.

May be the micro filter in the high pressure fuel pump. This pump is located in the engine bay. The vehicle also has a low pressure pump in the tank. If the high pressure pump is not delivering fuel to the fuel rail effectively in the GDI versions, the car will die under load. Its not a big job to do usually its a kit replacement with o rings and a micro filter. Probably a job for the serviceman.

What to do with sputtering and lack of acceleration

Scan for codes stored ion the OBD computer. Many auto parts stores can do this for you at no charge. Based on the results - a complete tune up may be in order.

Good luck!

Acceleration problem

possibly camshaft position sensor in the distributor, or weak fuel fump starts acting up when warm, or throttle position sensor. heat has a effect on sensors and electrical components in some weird and hard to find ways.

I have a 2000 ford expedition. Out of the blue it started sputtering and shaking when I accelerate. Vehicle has144,000 miles.

Sounds like one of the coil over plugs have gone bad. this will cause mis-fire which causes your car to sputter, skip, and shake. It can be changed easily when finding out which one it is. But rather expensive for a simple part $40+ each.

Rough idle, Car shakes, sputters and misfires upon acceleration

It sounds like you may have a problem feeding the fuel to your engine, I had the same problem with my 89 RS. All the 1989 model's fuel systems were recalled. I think you may need a new fuel pump. The fuel pump is located inside the gas tank in the rear of the car right under the rear axle. The fuel pump itself isn't too expensive, but with other small parts such as the electrical harness upgrade and fuel filter and the labor you should be looking somewhere in the $500 range. I hope this helps.
