On occasion my Ford Escape 2005 will quit running when I am braking as I come to stop sign or traffic light. If I lift my foot off of the brake as soon as it starts to die it will keep running. However, if I keep my foot on the brake as I come to a stop it will die. The engine light does not come on when this happens. What could be causing the engine to die. The car runs smoothly.

the service engine light is prob due to the oxygen sensor being damaged, not replace or you having the catalytic converter taken off---just messing with you. start at auto zone and have then do a free code read then go from there. you should troubleshoot the low fluid level switch for your brake fluid. unplug it and see if the light goes off and if it doesn't jump the two terminals on the harness. oh the car will have to be running. Let me know [email protected]

sounds like the torque converter lock up might not be disengaging. You might also want to check for engine vacuum leaks. Does engine idle smoothly when in park or nuetral ? if the idle is good I would suspect torque converter problem.

Removal & Installation
CAUTION
Dust and dirt accumulating on brake parts during normal use may contain asbestos fibers from production or aftermarket brake linings. Breathing excessive concentrations of asbestos fibers can cause serious bodily harm. Exercise care when servicing brake parts. Do not sand or grind brake lining unless equipment used is designed to contain the dust residue. Do not clean brake parts with compressed air or by dry brushing. Cleaning should be done by dampening the brake components with a fine mist of water, then wiping the brake components clean with a dampened cloth. Dispose of cloth and all residue containing asbestos fibers in an impermeable container with the appropriate label. Follow practices prescribed by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for the handling, processing, and disposing of dust or debris that may contain asbestos fibers.
To install:
CAUTION
Use of a brake drum puller or a torch is not recommended. Brake drum distortion can result.
NOTE
If the brake drum is rusted to the axle shaft pilot diameter, tap the center of the brake drum between the wheel studs.

WARNING
Whenever a wheel is installed, always remove any corrosion, dirt or foreign material present on the mounting surfaces of the wheel or the surface of the wheel hub, brake drum or brake disc that contacts the wheel. Installing wheels without correct metal-to-metal contact at the wheel mounting surfaces can cause the wheel nuts to loosen and the wheel to come off while the vehicle is in motion, causing loss of control. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury.

If your check engine light came on when the problem occurred, then you need to have the diagnostic codes read. I am cheap, so I would suggest going to an Advance or Auto Zone, they will read the codes and interpret them for you in hopes of selling you the part that will fix it. Good Luck. I hope you find this very helpful!
