Could a timing belt be causing my 2005 v6 sonata to be sluggish when accelerating?

It is a V6 automatic in great condition, and when I press the gas pedal, say when a traffic light turns green, the car does not accelerate right away. Ive been told that the timing belt needs to be replaced but I dont have the money right now. If it is the belt, is it okay to wait or should I just do it now?

Could be the belt and I would not wait, unless you to buy a whole new engine.

Have you checked the MAF and/or TPS sensor?. I have had the same issue before on the same kind of car and it turned out to be the MAF sensor.

SOURCE: What is size of replacement battery for 2000 sonata v6?

Size 75 was the standard battery many of the newer size 75's are actually stronger than the old 78's, so you can probably get away with a 75 which is a little smaller and lighter.

SOURCE: 2000 Hyundai Sonata GLS V6 - problem started last

Whenever the 'CHECK ENGINE' light comes on, the ECU (Engine Control Unit) sets a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC). These codes identify the particular engine management system which caused the light to come on. You'll need to use/find an OBDII (On-Board Diagnostic) Scanner to retrieve any code which have been stored in the ECU computer. Afterward, we might be able to help you DIAGNOSE and perhaps eventually fix the problem.

SOURCE: Hyundai i30 Diesel automatic won't accelerate above idle at light

DOES THE ENGINE MIL WARNING LIGHT COME ON? WITH OUT MORE INFO YOU NEED TO CHECK MOTOR ON A CODE READER FOR STORED FAULTS, CHECK ALL AIR LINES TO EMMISION CONTROL, , SOUNDS LIKE YOU HAVE GONE INTO SAFE MODE, A SPLIT OR LEAKING PIPE ON THE INTERCOOLER IS A COMON FAULT ON THESE, IF YOU SWITCH ENGINE OF AND BACK ON QUICKLY WITH MOTOR RUNNING WITH OUT STALLING MOTOR AND IT CLEARS THEN IT IS PROBERLY THE SAFE MODE CUTING IN MEANING A FAULT HAS BEEN SEEN BY PCM

Testimonial: "Thanks.Didn't notice any engine lights came on. I had a problem free day today, but if it happens again will check warnings and PCM computer check"

How many miles can you squeeze out of timing belt for sonata? How much typically charged for replacement?

The length of time that it will last varies greatly depending on the weather conditions in your area. The main thing is to do routine checks for cracks or rotting. The timing belt will normally cost around $75. The price might vary depending on if you have the 2.7L V6 engine or the 2.4L L4 engine.

My 2005 Hyundai Sonata (V6-2.7L engine) has 52,000 miles on it. I took it to the shop and had it inspected. The tech said that I should replace the timing belt soon. This sounds suspicious as I thought...

Not on this year and make, Hyundai Sonata with a 2.7L engine, Hyundai recommends replacing timing belt every 60,000 miles or 48 months, whichever occurs first, this is an interference engine, which piston to valve damage will occur due to timing belt failure.

You would have to proceed like you were going to change the belt until you could see it to inspect it. Here is a link to instructions on inspecting and replacing it.
