Rattle occurs when travelling over just a slight bump. Quite loud and penetrating and sounds like a few washers strung on a wire clanging together. Sometimes a vibrating sound from the same area.
Check your rear stabilizer bar an make sure that all the bolts are still intact. You may also want to crawl under the vehicle and give your muffler a shake to ensure that no mounts are missing. these are the most common issues associated with rattling from the rear of vehicle.
Thank you for your prompt response and advice. Now that I have got under the vehicle, I think I have found the cause - not the muffler or the stabliser bar, but a loose part that ties the rear bumper to the body! But for your advice, I would not have got under the car and found this - I was sure the noise was from the rear gate. Thank you. ****

Disconnect the wires going to the spring loaded switch in your hatchback.

Here is a quick try for you that works for me. Push the handle and make sure it is all the way returned to the closed position. Then try the lock, power or key. Then try and open. I have found that if the handle does not return to closed position it will not allow the lock to operate. Hope this helps and have a great day.

Hi,
Is it a manual transmission?
You may have a faulty release bearing in your transmission.

The shields on the exhaust manifolds may have been damaged or have rusted off [ very common ], causing the rattleing. If the shields aren't in place it will be louder. Another thing to check is the plastic undershield, it may have been left off when the gaskets were replaced [ also very common ].
