My 2000 Subaru Outback has a loud rattle from the rear gate (ie door)

Rattle occurs when travelling over just a slight bump. Quite loud and penetrating and sounds like a few washers strung on a wire clanging together. Sometimes a vibrating sound from the same area.

Check your rear stabilizer bar an make sure that all the bolts are still intact. You may also want to crawl under the vehicle and give your muffler a shake to ensure that no mounts are missing. these are the most common issues associated with rattling from the rear of vehicle.

Thank you for your prompt response and advice. Now that I have got under the vehicle, I think I have found the cause - not the muffler or the stabliser bar, but a loose part that ties the rear bumper to the body! But for your advice, I would not have got under the car and found this - I was sure the noise was from the rear gate. Thank you. ****

SOURCE: The rear gate on 2004 Subaru Outback will not open

Here is a quick try for you that works for me. Push the handle and make sure it is all the way returned to the closed position. Then try the lock, power or key. Then try and open. I have found that if the handle does not return to closed position it will not allow the lock to operate. Hope this helps and have a great day.

SOURCE: My 96' Subaru Legacy Outback had a loud rattle

Hi,

Is it a manual transmission?

You may have a faulty release bearing in your transmission.

SOURCE: When my 2003 Subaru Outback

The shields on the exhaust manifolds may have been damaged or have rusted off [ very common ], causing the rattleing. If the shields aren't in place it will be louder. Another thing to check is the plastic undershield, it may have been left off when the gaskets were replaced [ also very common ].

How do I remove the rear tailgate inner panel so i can replace the wiper motor and sort out an annoying rattle??

Most door panels have push lock retainers you just have to pull the panel off by prying around the edge. they make a special tool for this but you can use a flat screwdriver just pry close to the plastic pins under the panel

2000 subaru outback trunck won't unlock/open

Is it a lift back or window and tail gate? Either way, there is a little hole on the inside for the escape hatch. Take a small pin, wire, coat hanger, push it straight in, it should pop the window, door, whichever, might be a small button over the hole, that way you can get the door lock fixed without smashing the lock off. I never tried mine , but I know all cars have them now. Check it out.

Front suspension ratle

I think your (and my) Outback uses gas-filled shocks so the tell-tale signs of leakng fluid will not be visible.
Oddly, Haynes doesn't mention which is standard.

Try the 'bounce test,' it isn't conclusive but it may give you a clue as to whether you have a blown shock or not.

Push down firmly on each fender individually and let it rise suddenly.
Note how each corner responds, if a corner rises a little above static level, then falls back and stops, the shock is probably still functional.
If one or the other seems to bounce a little more than described, the shock is probably toast.
They should always be replaced in pairs.

120 K is a good run for any shocks; they mostly start to lose their function at half that mileage.

Rattle in left rear brake when hit a bump, Ithink it is one of the pads

If you are able to make the rattle go away by slightly pulling on the parking brake, then the problem is with the brake pad. Replace pad.
