SOURCE: How do I remove/replace the air filter in a 2001 Audi S4 ?

there is a large round flexiable hose that goes to the engine, at the other end of that hose is the rectangular shaped air filter box, it will be made out of plastic, under the top cover of this box is the air filter element.

SOURCE: 2001 Audi S4 Heater doesn't work

Thermostat has failed (stuck open) and needs replacement. It's a big job (5-6 hours charged labor for a shop), and requires the front of the car to be removed. Here's a pic of my car (B5 A4) a few weeks ago when I changed mine:

There's no way around it either - removing the front of the car is the only way to access it.

I'm wondering whether on my 2003 (B6) S4 4,2l V8 cylinder n. 4 is the fourth one (front to rear) on left bank or the second on the right one. This just to understand the real firing order. Thank...

Firing order for 2003 (B6) Audi S4 4,2l V8 engine is: 1 - 5 - 4 - 8 - 6 - 3 - 7 - 2

The only problem with the rear caliper is that you need a special tool that turn the piston while is being pressed at the same time.Hope this helps!
