I bought a used 95 Dodge Dakota extra cab. My problem is the headlights only work on bright,I bought a new headlight switch and it didn't fix anything. The way this is wired is someone ran a wire from the battery to the inside to a seperate toggle switch they installed then it goes back to the lights.Turning on the factory light switch doesn't make the lights come on,i have checked all fuses and looked everywhere for a loose connection/etc. I have to turn on the toggle switch to power my headlights and then pull out the factory headlight switch or else my tail/brake lights wont work at all. If i use the dimmer switch it will only make my dashboard lights and tail lights go off completely. Does anyone know or ever had any problem like this will this model truck? It would be nice to have both bright and dim lights while driving at night.(i have adjusted them to where the lights are on dim but their actually on high beams according to the dashboard blue light for brights) Would a Haynes/Chilton book show the complete wiring for this model truck so i could possibly figure this out because i am lost as far as what else to do? Thank you in advance to anyone who can help. Joey
I had this happen with my dodge ram 1500. the guy i bought it from put 350 dollar moon lit lights in with leds and they looked impressive but the issue was that they didnt go bright and i could only see 40 feet in front of me and i was sure taping led flashlights would have done me more good that those stupid headlights. then i had the idea of if the brights work and the dims dont then that means no electricity is getting to the dims so i decided to bridge the power from the bright headlight to the dims and it made all four work. now they all work, and only on bright. so im figuring there is a issue with the wiring in the truck. so this is a temporary solution if you really need just plain old lights like i did because i live out in the country

Are you serious? Remove the steering column cover and change the switch. Pretty easy!

Sounds like the head light relay is bad . Have you ever checked the headlight bulbs?
SOURCE: Dim Headlights/headlight problem
if that is the case i believe your altenator is bad and draining the battery the altenator runs the engine and charges the battery the battery starts the vehicle and runs all the electronics and accessories the regulator is not working and therefore the battery is not getting charged and as the vehicle is running and the lights are on they will get dimmer and dimmer until there is no voltage left in the battery. reploace the altenator and the problem will go away...please rate this

if you have tilt steering the problem is in the column a broken grand wire
