No, the spark plug wires are arching out. that means that the plug wires are bad and need changed. if good you will not see them arching in day or night. when changing wires, check the plugs also! good-day !

You said you replaced the plugs - did you use the toyota platinum plugs? I found out the hard way that even the platinum plugs from bosch or any other kind of platinum plug just doesn't work right. Yes, they are more expensive from toyota, but they can make a difference in the way the engine runs.

SOURCE: Location Of Spark Plugs, 2003 Camry?

They should be in the middle of the valve cover. Remove the cover that is covering them, and you will see the coil packs.

1999 GMC Safari, rough running, knock detonation at wide open throttle

It seems like a problem with your ignition system. You could take a look under the hood at night / in the dark to see if there are any sparks between the spark plug wires and anything they touch or lay close to.
As the engine needs to be running during this test, please watch out not to touch any moving parts as it might lead to severe injury.

If you see any sparks - change the spark plug cables. If not, try to move the cables (with engine off) away from any metal parts they could be touching. Then start the engine and see if the problem persists. If it makes no change, you will have to start replacing the spark plugs, rotor + cap, wires and maybe the coil.

The plug wires on this model year and prone to burn through, replace them all, do one at a time and always put them back in the factory wire looms they run through, that is very important, replace any you may break. Use high qyuailty oplug wuires foractory parts are preferred..

Engine Misfiring. Rough Idling. Losing power going up hills. Engine light flickered one day. I brought it to dealer. They said cyl 5 had a fouled spark plug. They replaced it, retuned and cleared code....

It sounds like it could be a bad coil pack that is used for number 5 cylinder. It could also be a bad spark plug wire. Does the weather seem to make a difference? Try this quick check once night time comes around. Open the hood and start the engine. Fill a bug sprayer with salt water and spray the plug wire while the engine is running. If the wire is bad, you might notice an electrical arc from the wire to the engine block. The engine will probably start running rough. If this occurs, then the wire should be replaced. If it doesn't, then the coil pack can be tested with an ohm meter. I hope this information has been helpful to you. Good luck with your problem and thank you for using Fixya.com.

The suv died while I was driving. Had it towed to a shop. They replaced the alternator as well as the harmonic balancer. Harmonic Balancer was replaced with an aftermarket part due to the fact Japan is not...

Assuming that the alternator was bad, preventing the battery from fully charging and the mechanic got it right. However the replacing the "Harmonic Balancer" makes no sense as the "Balancer" only smooths out the tendency of the engine to vibrate. See: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ex_yJ_V5UH8
As to it running rough check the spark plug wires as these on older cars tend to break the carbon path in the center of the plug wires thus loosing spark to a plug from time to time. Start the engine at night when it is dark and look under the hood at the plug wires to see if you have any arcing. Replacing the plug wires cost a little less than 20 bucks.

2005 saturn ion 141k miles on it. when you start car it runs real rough, put on a code reader and it read miss fires all cylinders.

Try this; get the car in an area that is as dark as possible, open the hood and let it idle. Allowing several minutes for your eyes to adjust to the dark, look for any sparks around the ignition wiring. My Saturn (now junked-too many problems) needed all plug wires replaced in under 3 years.

Engine miss firing loss in power

May just be a spark plug wire, spark plug, coil, or distributor issue. Try to look under the hood when it is dark. Have someone put it in gear and put a load on it with their foot on the brake and emergency brake on, while you look and listen for a spark. Also, may be a fuel filter, if you do not find a spark jumping somewhere. Usually fuel filter problems will be present when you go up a hill or equivalent. Sounds like electrical though. If you want to check the plugs, just pull them out and look for signs of misfiring. They should be slightly grayish colored. If they are black or any other dark color, then there could be deeper issues inside the motor. take care and good luck

Runs rough and engine shakes constantly

you dont tell me about first thing in the morning after the engine cooled /is it putting out blue smoke does it start easy /i came across a v6 in the past that done the same thing and even the old vw engine was known to do it ,broke the crankshaft,this would not allow the engine to fire right/advancing /retarting the timing.take all fuel filters out and put fuel direct to the engine and let it breath without air filter and see what happens, to what you tell me this lady is not getting enough fuel.but remember alwaws start at the start this whole problem could be a bad spark plug line .why not take a look under the hood after dark if everything is ok then you know to look further.come back to me on this one .adrian;;;;

Running rough and wants to die

Have the fuel pressure at the fuel rail checked. If you just want to throw parts at it: Fuel filter by the tank first. Fuel pressure regulator next. Order of ascending expense and likely hood. Does the fuel pump hum louder lately? The fuel pump may be on it's way out. It's not getting enough fuel to do anything but idle. Why that is takes some investigation. Somebody like Auto Zone may check your fuel pressure. If the fuel pressure is good, bad spark plug wires are the next guess. Lift the hood and run the engine in the dark (take the light bulb under the hood out if it still works to do this) If you see little lightening bolts traveling over the engine you need new plug wires. If the fuel pressure is good, the wires are good, change the spark plugs. Good Luck!
