Shifting from drive to neutral rpm remains high

Just changed spark plugs in my Saturn Vue 2006. It's the 4 cyc 2.2 L. noticed throttle body was pretty dirty. Sprayed Throttle body cleaner. Didn't remove from vechicle. Did the learn procedure for idle. Seems to run ok - but noticed a slight surge in rpm while driving, shifting a bit higher than normal. Also, shifted car into neutral while driving. RPM remains high, around 1500 and doesn't seem to come down, even when I brake. Could that mean the throttle body is still dirty? Was thinking about removing it from the vechicle and cleaning good. Also was thinking the MAF sensor or Intake Air sensor might be faulty. Looking for suggestions?

I would try the idle relearn procedure again, making sure everything is off while it idles- no radio, lights, a/c, etc.

Pull the engine coolant temp sensor, I know it sounds funny but do it if your looking at the engine it is located on the right side of the head.. chances are the ceramic tip on the sensor is cracked.. 15 dollar fix or so should take away from the high idle.. let me know how it works

Try tighting up your intake throttle body there should be 2 10mm bolts where the intake hose attaches to the throttle body. I had this problem with my sons car 2002. It was an air intake leak. Be careful not to break the bolts. you my have to remove and reseal.

SOURCE: runs smooth cold, sputters after about 2 minutes,

You might want to pull the coils and ignition control module. They are really easy to get to on this car, right on the front of the block. Ignition control modules can be tested electronically at most chain parts stores. Coil can be a bit more of a pain. Quite honestly it's very rare that any that I test, even the ones that I know are bad, test bad. Sometimes the coil windings spoil out and when they get hot they swell and no longer produce spark.

Is this a problem only in idle? Is it drivable and if so what happens then?

SOURCE: In my 2000 Saturn SL1 I am experiencing very high idle

You could try replacing the idle air control valve but I would obtain one from a local salvage yard, its cheaper and you are not certain if thats the problem, another thing i would check is your intake manifold gasket where it meets the cylinder head, if tha gasket is cracked or leaking it will allow excess air to enter the engine and make it idle higher, the easiest way to verify this is get a can of carb and choke cleaner and spray it all around the intake gasket area, if the engines idling characteristics change drastically then the gasket is bad and needs to be replaced if theres no change in the idle I would start looking for vacumm leaks and the idle control valve issue, which you specified.

2001 Nissan Altima idling high in parking or neutral

I have the same problem with my harrier 3000cc car. We have changed the idling sensor, airflow sensor. air filter, we have had the throttle checked, spark plugs, wiring and nothing works. The smell you are getting could be from your gear box, have it checked out early and if the gear shift is noticeable then you will need a gearbox specialist to open it and change the clutch plates. Good luck.

2004 saturn vue at low speed engine rpm up and down

I have the same problem with my 04 v6 awd vue.
The issue i see is with the transmission torque converter going in and out of lockup consistently. I have noticed when i engage cruise control this problem goes away for the most part. Today i turned on cruise at 30 miles per hour after noticing the rpm fluctuation about 400 rpm. change to only about 100 rpm. This has been an issue scene day one from the dealer. no codes, the transmission has not failed nor the torque converter. I think it is an issue with the drive by wire system. when you engage cruise control the foot throttle position sensor is out of the equation. This is my best guess, you can take it with a grain of salt.

RPM is over 400 rpm higher than it should be with no gas pedal.

Could be several things.. I would suggest replace the neutral safety switch, all O2 sensors and fuel and air filters, PVC valve and if needed plugs n wires..
The issue could also be a bad throttle body.. Should be a good idea to get it hooked up to a diagnostic machine - get the codes and then you will know more of what you are dealing with..

Have a great day !!

Sounds like a dirty IAC (Idle Air Control) valve. It is located on the throttle body. Remove it and clean it throughly as well as the throttle body underside as well where a lot of carbon build up is.

However, since it is such a high idle, check for any vacuum leaks. Check your hoses and lines running inside the engine bay, specifically near the intake. Spray some carb cleaner around while the engine is running to see if you can hear or see a leak. Check the intake gasket as well.

Sounds like you have a vacuum leak of some sort. Check all tubes and the intake for any hissing (while the car is on) to see if you can spot a vacuum leak. Check near the throttle body and the intake by the gasket to see if it has a leak in it. Spray some brake cleaner in some areas to see if you can see it as opposed to hear it.

A high idle like that is generally a vacuum leak and is probably effecting your transmission shifting if your able to get going in drive.

The other possibility if you find that there is no vacuum leak is to check the Idle Air Control valve (IAC) to make sure it is operating properly. It is a sensor on the throttle body. Also if the idle "resets" when you shut it off and turn it back on immediately then it is the Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) which is also on the throttle body. If either have a problem you need to replace them.

2002 Saturn Vue V6 Loss of Power

Yup. The throttle body connectors have a history of failing on these cars. Replace the throttle body and the wire connectors that go to it, and you're back in business. Not terribly difficult and you can get the parts from any dealer. Saturn actually has a bulletin out on this problem but they won't cover it unless you're under warranty - no recall for this.
