I don't know which diesel engine are you referring to, but in case of 2.0D 136PS glow plugs are behind engine, just between firewall and the engine, under the EGR valve Hard to reach.
You can check them without accessing them if you have multimeter.

SOURCE: locate cabin air filter in volvo V50

It's under the dashboard. First you must dismount the accelerator pedal (!), remove some dashboard plastic on driver side. The filter is somewhere behind the central console.
I think it should be changed every two years. Look into the manual.
The company where you take the car for oil & filter change every year must change also this filter with no additional charges. Of course they charge you for the filter, which is not very exponsive.

SOURCE: My 2006 Volvo V50 won't start.

Check the passenger foot area. The CEM is located there and many time passengers unplug connections with their feet unknowingly.

There is only thin insulation between the foot area and the CEM.

CEM= Central electronics module.

Volvo v50 wont start sometimes

Check if fuel lines don't have air bubbles.
If you have diesel, then also check glow plugs and throttle body air flaps.
Sometimes Central Electronic Module causes problems with start and other troubles (airbags, ESP, wipers) and usually you need to clean relays connectors.
