A heater core replacement on any vehicle is a very hard job. It would most likely involve taking the whole dash out of the car just to reach the heater and then you would have to open the heater box just to get to the heater core....If you have never done it before I would take the car to a service or repair center of your choice (it doesn't have to be a dealer). The money you spend will give you peace of mind because the job will be done correctly and if it gives you trouble, you have a warranty to fall back on. Much good luck

SOURCE: Heater core was replaced in my 1989 Oldsmobile and

You did not say what the exact problem was with the radio, but keep in mind the radio was probably removed to change out the heater core. If it is powering up but will not pick up any signal the antenna wire is probably not connected on the back of the radio. It just plugs in. Same problem could be if it does not come on. A plug in.

How do you change the heater core in a 1996 Oldsmobile LSS

Inspect/Replace If it is necessary to remove the heater assembly, the cooling system must be drained before removing the heater core.
When a heater core leaks, a new heater core is installed or the old one repaired.
Heater Housing
  • The heater housing is usually under the dash and must be removed to gain access to the heater core.
  • Procedures for replacing the heater core vary with the year, make, and model of car. It threfore necessary to consult the manufacturer's repair manuals for the proper procedure for replacement.
f74-01.gif The heater housing is disassembled to get to the heater core. Heater Core
  • Remove the access panels(s) or the split heater/air conditioning case to gain acess to the heater core.
  • Remove the heater coolant hoses.
  • Remove the cable and/or vacuum control lines (if equipped).
  • Remove the heater core securing brackets and/or clamps.
  • Lift the core from the case. Do not use force. Take care not to damage the fins of the heater core when removing.
  • To reinstall the heater core, reverse the removal steps.
When the heater core leaks and must be repaired or replaced, it is a very difficult and time-consuming job primarily because of the core's location deep within the firewall of the car. For this reason always leak test a replacement heater core before installation.

Instuctions for removing heater core

  • Disconnect the negative cable from the Oldsmobile Alero's battery. While the car is securely raised on jack stands, drain the engine coolant into a clean container. Most models don't have a drain plug on the bottom of the radiator, so you must take off the lower radiator hose to drain the system.
  • Step 2 Remove the drain tube from the heater's housing and disconnect the heater hoses from the core. Take off the center console, if one is equipped. Then, take off the sound insulators on both sides of the car, the steering column's opening filler, the air outlet duct and the floor air outlet to reach the heater core.
  • Step 3 Disconnect the heater core cover. Remove the core-to-housing mounting clamps and remove the heater core.
  • Step 4 Install the replacement heater core. Connect the mounting clamps and replace the core cover.
  • Step 5 Replace the rear floor air outlet, air outlet duct, steering column opening filler, sound insulators and center console (if equipped). Reattach the heater hoses to the core and the drain tube to the housing.
  • Step 6 Fill the cooling system, using new coolant if the old liquid doesn't appear clean. Be sure the lower radiator hose is securely back in place before filling the radiator. Reconnect the negative battery cable.
  • Step 7 Start up the Oldsmobile Alero's engine and let it run until it reaches normal operating temperature. Observe the climate control operation and check for any leaks in the system.
