My 91 Honda Accord 5spd is losing power and dying while I

1991 Honda Accord 5spd approx.195,000.miles. 6 to 7 months ago - right after we had gotten it smogged -it started not starting until the little beeps you hear when you turn key on - stopped beeping - then you could continue to turn the key on -and it would start. We never exactly figured out what the problem was - we ended up replacing the ingnition control moduale. That seemed to solve the issue - until recently when it started to die while driving- no sputtering or coughing like fuel issue - just dies like if you had unplugged it- now it wont start again until the check engine light is off- it seems as though its the cooling down that allows the check engine light to be shut off then car starts which takes 10 to 15min.- If you take battery cable off to reset check engine light it will start again - at first it was awhile before it died again- Now its much more frequent- it will die again within a 1/2 mile of starting. We were able to read trouble codes- we had thought it was just code 15- which is the ignition control modual sensor -Auto zone tested it-it was good-so we replaced the coil- it died again the next time we drove it- that night it died a total of 5 times on a 10 to 12 mile trip going half that before dying to start with- it seems to happen more after we have driven aways and come to stop or slow way down-we checked trouble codes again 15 and 16- I think we missed code 16 the 1st time- 16 is fuel injection sensor- because it seemed to be vaporlocking to me we wrapped the metal fuel line going into injectors with electrical tape and did the suggested troubleshooting that indicated the ignitor is malfuntioning- we are going to test the ignitor again. From the reserch I've done this seems to be a fairly common problem- but I have not been able to get a clear picture of what parts to replace or ways to troubleshoot parts to test if they are working properly. Any ideas on what to do? My funding is not unlimited.

SOURCE: go's half mile and dies.

First I would say less than a $1000 would have repaired your original issues, assuming there were several. How was it running and did the current problem start after all the work was done? Also, what you invested in money and parts ,I hope went to fix different issues.

SOURCE: Ford 460 loses power then dies. Starts back up. Idles fine.

It sounds like you might have a clogged catalatic converter on the exhaust system.

Your engine computer is bad. It's a good thing that you mentioned about the check engine light dying also, as this is a classic sign of a bad ecm. I have repaired more than one of these Jeep computers, replacing the three power capacitors located inside the computer, and they have worked for years afterwards. If you don't have the skills or knowledge to repair the ecm, get yourself a rebuilt ecm unit and swap it out.

theres nothing wrong with the fuel pump..did you test the mass air floww sensor or have the egr valve replaced..it will save you trouble from keeping your 2002 nissan altima from dying out.

You likely have a 3 way power relay issue or a defective pickup or igniter in the distributor. When these parts are defective the no starts come and go just like you have already experienced. If the car is over 100,000 miles all these problems are extremely likely. I doubt the distrutor cap and rotor were the cause.

A bad Main Relay is a very common cause of intermittent problems in these cars. It is located under the left side of the dash behind the change drawer. Write down the VIN and call the dealer or very good parts store. My guess is the dealer will have one in stock

If you manage to get it started, check the alternator output...I'm betting it is bad. Should be making no less than 12.5 with accessories all on, 13.5 to 14 with just engine running. Bad alt can drain battery even when off depending what failed inside it. Towing with a chain is not really a good idea. the cross pin in those differentials are not very good and can fail.

1991 Accord Code 43 reading

The o2 sensors because the car may have more than one, are located before the catalic converter, they look like spark plugs with 3 or more cables running from the top, scan the car to check for other codes.

91 Accord Car will initially start then when driving it will die sometimes starts right away sometimes 10 or 20 minutes later but has gotten more frequent about dying and taking longer to start

I have a 1991 honda accord dx that had the same problem. while driving it would just completely shut down. after about 5 minutes it start and run for a while then shut down again getting more frequently. There was a recall on the ignition control module (ignitor) which is in the distributor. call your local honda dealer with your vin # and will tell you if yours was replaced. If not I bought one from parts store for $60 or you could take a chance and buy one from a junk yard. I bought the whole distributor for $20 as a back up.
