The check engine light has been going on and off for several years. Each time I check the error code it registeres a 440 code. I have had the truck into the dealers and at different garages several times and so far the gas cap has been replaced, a solenoid in the engine compartement and the sensor in the gas tank. The lines have also been smoke tested and they said that they are OK. Is this really that difficult of a problem to solve? Can somebody offer some suggestions on my next steps?
You should be getting a code when the CEL comes on. You need to get a code reader to see what code it projects. This will give you a starting point to research the problem. Keep in mind the code may reference a cylinder misfire, but that does not necessarily mean it is a bad plug. Many items come into play here. There are lots of sensors that work together and when one goes out it causes other sensors to throw codes.

If they forgot to tighten the hose clamps on the hose from the tank to the filler cap it could be setting it off. If they are all tight it was probably just the gas cap. The gas cap is usually ALWAYS the culprit. Let me know if this helps

Hello: Without being there when the smoke test was performed no one can say what the results of the smoke test were. I would go back to the dealer and speak to the service director/service manager and request a new gas cap.
