Well 1st you need to check and make sure you have enough oil in the engine

check for oil leak

Just bought second hand ford focus 1.8 new exhaust but blowing sparks exhaust on way home? Guy says cos it's new

You have been conned . To blow sparks means that the exhaust gas temperature is excessive or that the cat converter is failing. Run the fault codes to ensure that the system is running as intended ( O2 and HO2s sensors) are ok and that the cat converter is working. BY the time the exhaust gas gets to the muffler the sparks would be out as the highest temperature is in the cat converter while the rest of the system is in a state if cooling down

Im buying a car through a private sale and he said the 2000 Ford Focus has an exhaust leak. how do you fix that? is that expensive?

It really depends on where the exhaust leak is. If it's in the piping or the muffler, then it won't be to bad fix with some over the counter stuff available at your local parts store. However, if the leak is in the manifold, then you could be lookin at replacing an exhaust manifold gasket. If it is in fact coming from the exhaust manifold, try tightening up the bolts. If work has been done on it before, there is a good chance one or two of the bolts could be loose or improperly torqued. The other thing to look for is a warped manifold, but that usually only occurs if the engine has gotten really hot. I hope this helps in some way.

Greyish black smoke with a smell of burning oil means only one thing, bad rings on the piston. Major engine rebuild.

Black smoke from exhaust pipe during start up

The black smoke is not a problem, it just means that there is a rich gas mixture in the motor to start the car from cold.

This is normal with a cold engine...

Sometimes there is a seeping of oil from old rocker cover gaskets.

If the oil is not running out in a trickle. Don't worry about it...

Wipe the oil away with a rag and see if it comes back soon.

Check the oil level on the dipstick regularly and you should not have any trouble...
